I recorded this solo yesterday for the track Bionic Hillbilly by Hectic Watermelon www.hecticwatermelon.com Originally I was to get one chorus, about 16 seconds. It was extended to 2 choruses. The problem I had was deciding whether to keep to the frantic nature of the solo section and come out guns blazing. I wound up playing MUCHO notes...

Amp is the Glaswerks SOD 50. Baker RF on bridge. SM57 mic. Emmy Red White and Blue.

After recording, I made some tweaks for the much better. I replaced the JJ 6L6 outputs (which were not intentionally up at 46ma!!!) with Winged C tubes at 38ma. I tweaked my HRM a little and the post OD bleed. I added a 12pf bright cap on the OD master. There was none on the master for this clip.I also raised the Dumbleator recovery amp plate from 177v to 192v. It was noticeable and an improvement I think. And some other general neatening things.

EDIT: I just recorded this NON HRM take that I liek more both tonally and playing. I'll do some HRM clips later. It is also sounding much better now that I made the most recent changes.

I like the attack - each note is distinct and clear. Very tight-sounding.

Wonderful cut Scott! Clear and articulate notes with that nice Dumble sing in the highs. It will be nice to hear your solo in the context of the entire piece. The description of your tweaks is also greatly appreciated.

I just got a 2X12 cab I need to populate with some speakers. Looks like you still favor the Red,White,Blues.

It's difficult to tell if the frantic/nervous nature of this solo fits in the piece without hearing the rest of the piece. Plus it's hard to decide with my head spinning like this.

Amazing playing Scott, kinda reminds me of Early Les Paul, pre Mary Ford/frantic solo's. Melodic and wild at the same time.

I'm thinking out loud here - but sometimes its best to react to the sounds without too much reflection......

... the NON HRM is "wider" and a tad smoother to me.

The HRM sounds "narrower" and more "aimed".

I like the slightly looser , silky feel of the NON HRM clip.
I also like the slippier opening phrase on the second clip.

Its so subjective - like fine wine tasting - but great to hear these clips Scott.

2nd clip for me ....Both are bloody great though.

IMHO, the HRM solo fits better here. Much more authoritative - sits better in the mix.

Just put a 250k pot and .001uf cap in series from the V2b plate to ground. Works on both HRM and non HRM. I recommend a 47k tail to ground as well.... I like nonHRM set around 140k resistance and HRM set at around 180-200k.

I use that arrangement in a "pre-OD" but have not tried "post-OD". I'll have to try that and compare.

I installed a switch that puts a high frequency trim (0.01 cap into a 100k pot to ground) before or after the OD section. The difference is not subtle. Using pre-OD, the sound is more raw and grindy, if that makes sense. Using it as a post-OD control makes the sound more fluffy and furry.
I like it both ways.
It does affect the gain. I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion as to whether to put the control in parallel with the OD input trim or after the input trim (180k into 100k pot)?
