The black box will definitely be an inductor as this isn't a plain old resistive attenuator.

Bear in mind that Tim is a one man shop, building these on his own, and has had custom chassis fabrication and heatsinks made, all as part of delivering a quality product.

The first batch of 10 were offered at a price based on an early estimate of costs before a final metalwork supplier was found and before the wattage rating was increased to 100W (since Dave Friedman of Rack Systems mandated that it would have to work with dimed 100W Marshalls to be successful) so this also required the addition of the external heatsinks. Despite not making any money on these 10 at all, Tim still delivered them to the customers on the first list at the price he'd offered.

The second batch of 25 are not complete yet (I know because I'm in the second list). Again, parts costs have actually increased considerably since this list was started back in February, so the margins are not actually great on these either, despite the apparent high end cost.

If I thought that Tim was ripping people off then I'd be happy to support a bit of reverse engineering on these, but I don't. He's passionate about his art and wanted to put out a really high quality product into the hands of players. This is why a number of prototypes did the rounds to get feedback from professionals about what they wanted and how they'd use it.

So anyone figure anything out about the black box? Would it be a network of inductors, caps, and resistors making up the reactive load magic of the phantom???

Anybody have a clue on what a used one is worth? I found one that I can score for $199, not sure if that's a good deal or not.....

Go for it.

It's a good unit except at real bedroom volumes, but none of the Airbrakes are good at low volumes IMO - they're best for knocking some volume off
