Opinion about clone chassis

Post by jackson649 »

Hello, newbie here and am interested in building an OD reverb. I would like to use one these (link), but I have some questions for those who might have tried these.

1) Assuming you will be fitting a reverb pan along with the chassis in a head cabinet, who makes a head cab that will fit?

2) Description said it will include parts layout, are these similar in layouts and parts used in the majority of peoples builds?

I've been researching for this build for the last couple weeks and I am going to start ordering parts pretty soon. This is a great forum and I will be probably asking a lot of questions in the upcoming weeks and months. I hope this will be a successful build. Thanks

Check with Jeff Swanson at:

http://www.swansoncabinets.com/

He will make anything you want. He is an artist! He is currently doing a run of Dumble head cabs this week. You might be able to get one in. Tell him Allyn sent you

AFAIK, that chassis is not the same circuit as what's in a Dumble Overdrive Reverb. There are only five preamp tubes: the OD Reverb has six.

The chassis looks to be very well made (although you might be better off making your own eyelet/turret boards).

I'm not sure how the reverb is done in that chassis, but you have several options - you could do it with a combined effects loop/reverb as is done in some Two Rocks, or you could do something closer to a Fender BF circuit.

Of course, Dumbles sound great without reverb, or with an external reverb processor in a Dumblelator loop. If you haven't built anything before, it might be best to start simple.

The chassis is OK but the boards and layout diagram are pretty feeble. Still, it makes a good starting point for a clone. If you're trying to build an exact replica, be advised that the chassis is .090" aluminum, not .125". Also, the end caps are only inset 1/8", not 1/4" so you'll have to run your mounting screws inside the chassis. (The end caps are barely tack welded so I suppose you could knock them loose and retack.)

The silk screening is pretty nice. I don't know if it's an exact copy of any particular model, but it does say Dumble. :)

The power tranny cutout is for a 100W PT so you'll have to use big flat washers to mount a 50W PT. Also the OPT is not positioned acurately. (No biggie. It'll work but it won't be exactly like the pictures I've seen.)

All in all, it's not a bad place to start, but it's NOT a kit so you'll have some work ahead of you. My biggest criticism is the boards, but it's easy enough to build your own so again, no biggie.

I'm going to take some work over to Jeff Swanson tomorrow. He works 20 mins from my house. He's retolexing a customers '72 Marshall Superlead and he's building me a cutom Dumble cab.

Wicked nice guy and takes the time to get to know exactly what you want and will work with you on custom designs. Excellent pricing to. The pictures on his website display the quality.
