Volume Loss

Post by garysanders »

I have posted a few threads on the 124 I have been building and it is finished except the supply for the relays (temporarily using 9 volt batteries for testing). It sounds great.Absolutely without second thought, the best sounding amp I have ever owned! One final problem.

VOLUME!

It is not near as loud as I think it should be.It has a good stage volume with the master all the way up on the clean channel.Overdrive pushes it up a good bit and it is almost there but the clean channel is nowhere near as loud as it should be.I have checked and traced then double checked X10.Running NEW JJ 12AX7s two NEW Ruby 6L6, at -51,40mA( about .5mA difference in the pair),ALL plate voltages are dead on at all stages. The EVM 12L is good.I tested it with another amp and it screams. The only thing I know I did different was used B taper 1M pots instead of A because I haven't found any locally and will have to order them and the tone stack pots and caps are a little different from tone tweaking but nothing to cause such a problem.
I have read a 50 watt is only about 3 db quieter than a 100 but this is WAY less than that.I have never owned a 50 or played through one much, just wish-booking in stores, but this does not seem near what this amp should be putting out.

Opinions please!Thanks

First use another preamp into your power amp in jack to make sure your output section is not at fault. If ok, use an ohm meter (with all pots on 10) and measure resistance to ground at various points in the clean signal chain. Compare against the schematic for abnormalities. If no luck, as a test try clipleading a 0.1 cap from the top of the slope to the 220k/500pf pair on V1b grid which will bypass the tone and volume.

Found the problem.I really like to complicate things if you cant tell already...
The jack switch on the return to power amp was defective. It was not closing when unplugged. Thanks for telling me about running the different pre into it.Thats how I found it.Now I'm rattling the windows!I sure do love that EV 12L!

BUT ALL OF THE WIRING WAS RIGHT! :D Very happy with only two 6L6s now.

Thanks again!

No,the Carvin came with the EV in it.I tried my 4x12 with it too.Really nice!

I will eventually build a cab for it like that one. This ones been down the road. Its not 100% yet, still tone tweakin and just got the trans for the relays tonight.I come across some old AJAX papers and just for fun I am seeing how they sound. Now the guts really look like an old 40's radio cause I built everything on terminal strips to begin with.

I still cant believe it was that damn jack. :evil:But I am now VERY familiar with the layout of the controls.
