Best amp for SG?
So, I was dead-set on building a frankenstein Bassman-ish creation to be used as my "SG" amp, but I'm having second thoughts. I've found my Tele amp(s), but as much as I like my SG I feel that it could be better served by different amps than what I currently own (AC30-ish, Marshall 18w-ish).
I'm stuck between building a Blonde Bassman or a Plexi-JTM 45 thing, as I wager both would be good amps for my SG. I know it may sound odd to build an amp for a guitar, but I know my SG is great (you can tell by playing it un-plugged, etc...) and could be even better with the right amp. Your suggestions are appreciated...

Re: Best amp for SG?
Try out if you can a Marshall JTM 45 and see what you think of the SG through that.
Fender with some Dumble updates would work rather well. Or start from scratch build rather than deface a vintage Fender.

Re: Best amp for SG?
Eh, yeah, I think my heart says Marshall or, yes, Dumble-y something.
And yes, I know "best" is one of those annoying terms people always seem to use on the internet, but when someone says "Best Tele Amp" I sure do have an answer or two for them.
What I mean by "best" is that classic combination of guitar/amp that has just lasted the test of time and always proven itself to be a universally "good" fit. You know...Les Paul/Marshall, Strat/Marshall, Tele/Deluxe, Gretsch/Vox. I just am at a loss as to what the equivalent would be for SG, other than your typical AC/DC thing....which is great, don't get me wrong...

Yeah, that's a good one. I never really cared for his tones on with Cream, though they were definitive in their own right. I much preferred the LP/Marshall thing, save for the aforementioned Angus Young tone of bliss.

Re: Best amp for SG?
How about some sort of Plexi (not thinking JTM45) - a JCM800 2204, or something more boutiquey like maybe an SLO100 clone (I know these are neither of what you had in mind)
Re: Best amp for SG?
I don't know I built the Rt 66 with JTM iron and it is basically JTM in my book and it sounds great.
Parts for JCM 800 2204 are on there way from Triode as we speak so then I can compare that with my JTM flare.
Dehughs, is the amp you want mainly for classis rock or variety music with the SG?

Eh, I've always had a thing for the various AC/DC tones, so SG/Marshall and Gretsch/Marshall have been in the back of my mind for some time.M Fowler wrote:I don't know I built the Rt 66 with JTM iron and it is basically JTM in my book and it sounds great.

However, I've always had a curiosity about the 6G6-B, what with The Who and The Beatles using that amp for some of their great tones. I'm not sure how well the SG would mix with that amp, though, whereas I KNOW the SG works great with classic Marshalls....
I wonder how a JTM-45 would work with 5881s?

Re: Best amp for SG?
I would have to say Marshall 50w for what you are after. The Fender can get their with pedals at less ear splitting levels though and look cool at the same time.
Re: Best amp for SG?
JTM45 with 5881s and .047uF PI couplers, or JTM45/100 if you want big iron.
Take a listen to the offset JTM45 with 6L6es in the clips in this thread see how well that meets your criteria!

Re: Best amp for SG?
I like what Derek Trucks gets out of his Super Reverb.
Re: Best amp for SG?
Is that a stock Super Reverb do you know?
Re: Best amp for SG?
I saw Derek Trucks several times when was using the two Black face Super Reverbs, before they were stolen. He had a TS 9 on top of one of the amps. It was on the entire time. He does not sit it on the floor and turn it on and off, he leaves it on all the time. He goes from clean to overdrive with his attack and volume control on his Guitar ( SG at the time ). Now that he is using the PRS ( SEWELL) amp , he may not need the TS9. I worked on a sewell Once and it appeared to be based on the Tweed Fender Pro. I have heard others report no TS9, but I know what I saw and heard. I was there for the sound check and he was adjusting the TS9, afterward, he never touched it except to turn it on just before his set.
