magnetic relay problem?

Post by soberskipper »

I snagged a Laney GH50L that had previously been "repaired" by a local shop. Apparently, the shop replaced the OT but had not fixed the real problem that blew it... and they put in a Hammond 1650K, which can only use one secondary AND hooked up the secondary incorrectly so the previous owner didn't even think it worked at all. When I got it, I used the amp with the HiFi tranny for a coulple weeks until it began to "fizz out" while playing.

I am looking in the direction of the magnetic relay switch/transistor/diode system right before the OT primary but don't have any previous experience with these futuristic power supply features. Anyone have any suggestions or experience with the relays?

If you need a schem, I can email one but can't find a link right now...
thanks

I was looking at the GH100L schematic at Schematic Heaven.

Looks like it uses toroid ultra linear transformers?

Are you talking about the opamp section before the phase inverer?

Those Hammond transformers have to be wired in a special way to utilize the different taps.

Check out this switch that Antique Electronic Supply sells.

No, I'm talking about where the CT connects to B+. In the schematic is is labeled as "delayed turn on" and looks like half of a transformer. On the board it is a large clear plastic box with a copper wire coil and some metal fingers with magnets on the tips. I guess it is a relay switch which has a diode and transistor to protect the OT in case of its failure. Something like that. I've been looking for info but can find only find a couple sentences about the system.

You could try shorting TS5 Collector to Emitter to jam the relay in the ON position and see if the problem goes away. (REFDES based on GH100L - YMMV)

This would at least localize the problem to the delay circuit or not the delay circuit.

It would probably be easy to clip a jumper to D9's anode and another to some handy ground.

-- the circuit is a sort of auto-standby that forces a B+ holdoff until the tubes are hot. Removing the delay would not be an altogether bad thing if you develop the discipline to do it yourself ... or decide you don't care.

Hope this helps!
