who repairs transformers?

Post by selloutrr »

i have a blown drake power transformer from a 70's marshall i've been using as a paper weight who can fix it and what does that usually cost?

since it's the power transformer it's less about tone and more about looks and date codes. I'm not a fan of OT transformer restoration the few that i've heard seem to have lost the magic.

Pretty sure Heyboer can do it, just remember that they will pretty much have to tear it down and rewind it, so it's gonna coast about the same - if not more - as a new PT.

Talk to Alden at Heyboer...

Brian Wallace is the other person that springs to mind.

He's done lots of rebuilds on vintage trannies.

Don't be surprised if a rewind costs more than a new clone. They have to unwind it and rewind it. A new one only gets wound. You see, it is twice the work! I have heard that both Heyboer and Mercury will rewind, but you are likely to do better if you find someone who isn't into it as a commercial business.

Try the ham radio folks. My impression is they are self-reliant types. See if there is a local AARL chapter that can refer you to someone.

Somebody was quoted a price around $400 for a rewind the other day.
Seems like it was a Marshall 100w PT.

I think I saw that at the Metro forum.
Don't take my word on it but from what I gather it is very expensive.

Don't let that smoke out!

I kinda of had that thought when i held on to it. i guess it's a pretty good paper weight for now but if a build warrants it then it's nice to have options.

Find a new one with the same dimensions and swap out the bell ends.
