what sort of style of music do you play?
where will you be playing?
do you been a speaker cabinet?
if you have a cabinet what do you have?
what kind of guitar do you play single coil or humbucker?

seriously i could give you a 100 amps for under a grand that dont suck
if you aren't sure about any of the above questions look for an ampeg VT22 or VT40
both are a combo version of a V4 head (not a V4B!!!) the 22 has dual 12" altecs (417?) and the 40 is a 4x10 version like a bassman.
both are loud and F*^ and offer both clean and over driven tones aswell as the famous ampeg reverb.
The V4 can easily be purchased for under $700 so you could pick up a nice set of new tubes and still have $$ left over.

Style? Blues, blues rock/classic rock, with some jazz tinges.

Played where? Home project studio set-up, maybe just jamming with a few buddies at home. Not interested in live (concert, club, whatever) playing in the least.

Speaker cabinet? None. Cheap solid state amp that makes sound and that's all I can say that's good about it. (Peavey Rage 108  )

Type of guitar? A Kramer Striker 600ST, and though it may be looked down upon (cheap body and hardware and electronics, I know), I've kept all these years, as the neck is sublime and wouldn't trade it for the world. It has a bridge humbucker (with coil tap - I believe it's a Seymour Duncan) and two single coils (which don't cut it, IMHO). All the electronics WILL be replaced (the single coils are definitely gone, undecided about the SD, or may replace all with just two quality humbuckers - make as yet unknown) as well as most of the hardware, i.e. just about everything on it will be getting a complete overhaul.

Looking for a certain Peter Green-ish, Paul Kossoff-like, early Santana, early Clapton type of tone, not that my description is of much help!
Willing to make a significant investment in all of this, that is, if it's worth it. Maybe I'm expecting too much, I don't know. Hope that helps clarify things.

Good information from you and will narrow it down somewhat :D

I had a Kramer guitar and it was built very well, traded if for something don't remember.

The prices of some tube amp builders has been driven down and used sales right now is great. Ebay alone will score you some fantastic amps and on Z-talk forum I have never seen so many amps being sold due to hard times. Keep looking for your amp.

I still believe that buying a high-end tube amp solely for home use is a waste of money. Tube amps turned down to home-friendly volumes do not sound any better than their solid-state counterparts (most sound worse). Practicing with a tube amp at home-friendly volumes in no way prepares one to use that amp at jamming or gigging volume. A tube amp's performance envelope changes significantly with respect to volume. One will need to reduce preamp gain and re-EQ the amp in order to avoid sounding like a buzz saw on most high-gain designs.

I should note that, although at the moment, my "project studio", such as it is, is in a semi-enclosed area in my living room of my apartment, my hope is to someday (hopefully within two years) have my own small house, in which one room will be rebuilt in an properly soundproofed manner. Then the volume (disturbing the neighbors, disturbing my better half) won't really be an issue.

So the amp hunt continues. I thank you all for your helpful suggestions. Keep 'em coming!

Your opinion...Now for some facts. I build tube amps so I speak from experience. Yube amps even at low volumes still exhibit a "sweetness" that SS can't touch. And if you get an amp with a VVR circuit installed you can play at "bedroom" levels and still have all of the overdrive, distortion and sustain that you normally only hear at higher volumes.
Try as many tube amps as you can, talk to some custom builders I build many models for less than a grand brand new. I am sure other builders" can" also if they want to. And make sure you get one with a VVR circuit installed."

It depends on your definition of "Home Friendly" volume. If my neighbors dogs bark at 3 in the morning, I sure as heck play my 35-80 watters in the "sweet" zone. With earplugs, of course.

I have my man cave as my wife calls it and I rock out with what ever I am testing. :)

No complaints except for the Mrs, but then she will reside to the second floor if she wants to hear the TV. She is trained after 31 years of marriage.

no offense but i'm not sure how this is helping the poster find an amp.

question for the poster are there any guitar players you see as a hero? with the economy so low it's amazing the amps that are starting to surface for cheap! I found a 71' super lead in san diego for $850 last weekend.

There is a guy in the emporium that is practically giving away a VVT dumble style build.
