Liverpool & Rocket - Recommended Speakers

Post by Last Nerve »

I'm going to build both the Liverpool and the Rocket.
They seem different enough to warrant having both. :)

I'd like to go 1x12 for the speaker cab, to make it easy to lug around, but might end up going 2x12 with some mismatched speakers (ceramic/alnico) if everyone says that's the way to go.

So I'm wondering what have been the stand-outs for everyone with their Liverpools and Rockets?

Just a few thoughts to get you rolling I personally enjoy
the vintage Ampeg V4 cabs w altecs sound amazing
Hard to go wrong with the pre-rola 12" speakers
the new scumbacks are very musical once broken in
If you like a browner sound an overdriven tone tubby is pretty hot.

+1 on the Tone Tubby (I have a ceramic and it rocks)
My other 1x12 cab (Semi-open) has an Eminence Private Jack and both the rocket and Liverpool sound great through it.
I had another 1x12 with an Eminence Governor and it was OK but the Private Jack blows it away IMHO

I recently tried an Austin Speaker Works 12" and it is the only speaker to better the Scumback or Weber speakers I have been using. I am building an amp right now and will be putting the New ASW Absolute 12" in it. It had more upper chime and a bigger middle sound than the Scumback, bass was comparable( good). Also, Ron , the builder, explained how they don't need to be broken in either. He was able to contact and get info from the original designer of the Pulsonic cones used in the very best Celestions. His cones are recreations of the original Pulsonics, he calls them "Featherlight" I believe. Bottom line is, they sound better than anything I have auditioned to date. They are a little pricey, but cheaper than a real vintage Celestion.

I really like Scumnicos, maybe try their 65 watt version. Like a cross between a G12H30 and a Blue.

Warehouse ET65, easily best tone for the dollar. With my rocket, of all ive tried the G1265's are to my ear the sweetest. From playing some, i gave the warehouse version a go, and im real impressed. Very sweet.

Thanks guys. Good to hear some suggestions.

So, I might pick up one of those ported 1x12 Bogner Shiva cabs.
Found one local, at a great price and the build quality seems great too.

Anyone find a difference between open-back and closed-back cabs?
Do the TW circuits prefer one or the other?

For the option of a smaller cabinet, I like the sound of a pair of tens. One ceramic and one alnico is what I'm using and it works quite well.

Mismatched speakers

Post by sst4270 »

I'd recommend mismatched ceramics.
I've used mismatched Scumbacks with great success.
High power Alnicos are very expensive. And you want high power handling with TW's. The break up and distortion characteristics you're gonna get from severely overdriving under-powered Alnicos is gonna drastically affect the tone of the amps. IMO.

Good Luck.

No, but I think they're supposed to be the Eminence answer to Celestion blues.

I hear they're bright, but mellow once broken in and I know a few 18 watter buildders have had success with them

I have a Red Fang and like it well enough when paired with a Ceramic . I used it with a Scumback H55. But by itself, I was less than thrilled. It was OK not great.

A little more research done, and I think I've figured it out-

MatherCab OS 1x12 cab, black tolex, black grill, elliptical opening on the back.
Loaded with a Scumback H55.

I'm excited!
