Re: Free Parts
The flipside to not getting thanked is to give something in return which can be insulting...I was given a piece of equipment for helping a guy on a forum and he sent me something I thought was to much so I reciprocated immediatly...which in hindsight insulted or belittled his gift of thanks...
I try not to do that anymore...I give without expecting anything back and accept with "thanks". I explain to my kids (all three) that you need to be respectful of others..stomping along on the ME train doesn't cut it, and yes you get pissed off at the jerks out there...1000's of them.

Re: Free Parts
I'd like to say this:
That every time I used to sell something musical realated on TGP or even ebay I would include something for free-whether it was a free set of strings, a pickup or you name it, I never got a "hey, tahnks for the free stuff".
Not one time ever out of dozens of examples. I gave the last free item as an agate pick from picks and stones- It was $35 and I inclued it with a $100 pedal purchase. Not one word about it.
My advice is if you are looking for "thanks" I wouldnt give anthing away for free". If it makes you feel good then knock yourself out!
Im only 35 but I have noticed a huge lack of manners amongst Americans my age and under. I think its several reasons as was pointed out earlier. Kids not being raised right and having everything tehy way on credit and not having to wait /save on things. You go to a third world country(where you won't get killed for being an american) and you will meet very grateful human beings.
I guess not even just 3rd world counties. In my travels as a musician I have noticed that most places have more manners than here.

Am I the only one who finds it funny that etiquette is being discussed at a site devoted to piracy?
Re: Free Parts
Building and tweaking versions of a favorite amp is far from "piracy".wscrane wrote:Am I the only one who finds it funny that etiquette is being discussed at a site devoted to piracy?
"Piracy" would be pushing one of these off as an actual original, which as far as I see-would NOT be tolerated here.
How do you think HAD or KF learned their skills?
Free stuff-never had a bad experience giving things away,
even as bonuses to purchases.

Re: Free Parts
Well, i just gotta say thanks to Moose, i got some trannies from him a while back, and he was kind enough to stow away a LOT of small items for me that are harder to find locally here in Aus. And very helpfull across the board with tips and how to's. When i received my package there were a few more items that i had not paid for, that were very useful. While we had a business arrangement, he went far and above the call of duty. Many many thanks Moose, you rock.

Re: Free Parts
When I got my amp kit from Barry (BnWitt) he provided me with so many extra parts, put the Asteroid together with correct parts, finish and help. I thanked him as I would not have been able to make such an amp without his kindness.
I haven't had any problems with the people on this forum and it has been such a pleasure being a member and I will take the opportunity right now to thank Allyn and all of you that have offered help, called, PM'd and emailed me, the list goes on all have contributed to my amp building. Thanks.

Re: Free Parts
I'd like to extend a thank you out to everyone out there that is generous enough to help out someone else when they need a hand to keep their passion going.
Another thank you to everyone here that shares their time and knowledge to those (myself included) that often need some direction.
This is a great community, and I'm thankfull to be a small part of it.
....allright I'm done being all gushy. Thanks guys.

Re: Free Parts
I'm no stranger to your gripe. I run into it almost everyday. My profession is full of young unknowing people that doesn't know what is going on nor do they understand what real meaning of life is. I try to help others all the time and like you I find those that can not be helped. I say - let it go man. You can't hold grudges. Give if you want to give and not give when you don't want to. All the while expecting nothing in return. Otherwise - then...... lol
This forum is the greatest on the net with the best bunch of guys anywhere. Have a problem come here... they will help ya if they can. I have no doubts. I've read here for quite awhile before first posting.
Give if you want and all the while expect nothing in return. If you expect more then get it first.
I've said too much already, so I'll stop.

Re: Free Parts
I'll be another who jumps on the bus to thank everyone in this forum.
Just for being here.
Many times you answered my questions before I thought myself through a problem.
That is true expertise, and going far beyond the call of duty.
For example..."if it's doing this, and then this, then these three other branches of thought lead to this..." etc.
I don't feel gushy.
S'all goof, y'know.
Great stuff!

You just don't get it. I am not holding any grudges, I am not even upset. And who said I was expecting something in return????? WTF????MBD115 wrote:I'm no stranger to your gripe. I do however expect common courtesy. So as I have said I wont give anything else to those whinny little SOBs on the two Bass Player forums and here I will be very selective and give to people who I know will appreciate it. You know who you are. But because of a few ingrates the new guys who this was designed to help, are going to get cut out of the picture. Enough said.
Re: Free Parts

Re: Free Parts
a friend had given me a variac a while back when i had started building, because he remembered evh used one and said, oh ull use this. he knew what it was worth too, i thanked him quite a bit. and hes my age. we're both 18. and yet, there are tons of people my age who are completely disrespectful...it comes up a lot with amps too. they dont treat them properly, and just ruin em. we all know they need love.
they can be ruffed around a bit, but seriously...not many people my age actually take the time to do something themselves and wait for it. no pride in their work...
they just havent built a express and gotten it to stop squealing.

Re: Free Parts
Cool.
I hope you aren't running any amps through that variac unless it's set on the "dot"...120VAC.
It's a bench tool, not a power conditioner.
And CAN be deadly to people and amps.

"What is happening to our young people? They disrespect their elders, they disobey their parents. They ignore the law. They riot in the streets inflamed with wild notions. Their morals are decaying. What is to become of them?"

Don't get me wrong - I love this forum and the open source attitude that dominates here, and am incredibly grateful to all who contribute to the vast knowledge base that exists here - but I also believe that there is nothing new under the sun...
