Push Back: Wax on - Wax Off?

For those of you who've had your hands inside old Fender Amps. Did Fender wax their cloth wire?

I know what the waxed stuff is like...ick. The BF amps I've been into, did not have the slimey sheath.

I've only encountered it on early to mid 50's tweeds. All since then that have crossed my bench have been non waxed.
