Hi Brandon,

thanks for the reply and I aggree: if you want to get the LC/EJ SSS sounds the usual SSS PI seems to make more sense. But for "Texas Flood" tones and silky "Lenny" sounds Dumblelands are hard to beat. I like both a lot.

Have a great time in NY!

Cheers

This flavor certainly does that silky Lenny and riviera paradise tone, to me the other one was more "flat" sounding this one has more flavor, and doesn't require you hammer the guitar to get the tone!

So what schematics did you use for your build, I've never seen any drawings for a Dumbleland, and nothing complete for a SSS.

Having had a few SSS amps on your bench will you be sharing your knowledge with the forum?

There are quite a few builders working on SSS type amps but without any real info on these amps everyone seems to be making it up as they go...

It would be great if we had the same depth of information about the SSS like we do for the ODS...

Hi Brandon,

I think that I understand what you are talking about. If done and set up in a specific way it seems to me that SSSs and Dumblelands can both do the glassy and the silky sounds.

My personal impression was allways, that how much Dumbleland is in a SSS and how much SSS in a Dumbleland depends on how precisely all the ingrediences of the cocktail are mixed (tonestack, inductor or not, reverb circuit, amount of preamp feedback, voltages, PI, kind of OT...).

So I am not that sure, if the "flatness" ( I think I understand what you are talking about) of this special 150 W SSS with the Dumbleland PI is mainly a result of the PI or of the complete mix of all ingrediences.

At least not one of the Dumblelands for Guitar I know (all usual DL PI) had this kind of "flatness" (all very responsive Rock'N'Roll monsters), and I think that one reason for this this could perhaps be that they all did not sport a lot of negative feedback in the preamp. But that is only a guess of course.

Anyway:

Have a great time and - Chapeau!

Max,

The DL PI is flatter sounding and does not break up. Combined with too much NFB in the preamp it can sound too dull.

If this place hadn't become such a scavenging yard for would-be commercial builders to hone their skills I'd gladly have shared what I know years ago, but people come here with no prior knowledge of these circuits, hang out for a while, get just enough knowledge to be dangerous, then go tout their "expert" skills to the world. no thanks, i'll let folks figure it out this time.

I'm amazed at the quantity of commercial amp builders around now a days...

How can they all survive?

Is'nt there a recession??

How can they make any money???

If it was your own designs you were protecting I'd see your point, but we're talking about Dumble's designs not yours.

If everyone followed your philosophy this forum wouldn't exist and we wouldn't have the copious amount of information we have on the ODS. There are already plenty of commercial builders building both the ODS, and SSS style amps and if someone else who is on this forum wants to enter the fray we'll it's a free country isn't it; one thing for sure they're not going to be rolling in the dough by building amps...

I'm sorry you feel bitter about sharing your knowledge but the majority of us have absolutely no desire to build amps commercially could benefit from people like yourself sharing information...

Hi Jelle,

do you remember the series numbers of these Dumblelands you played, that you have found to be 'dull'? Or if not the numbers, perhaps how their cabinets looked like?

I ask, because what you report surprises me.
Up to now I had the opportunity to play four Dumblelands and two SSS and some of them very often and for many years and - please believe me - I never met a Dumbleland that sounded "dull" or "flat". And some of them did break up ('Volume' full open) even more as some ODS (ODS in clean mode of course) I know.

But perhaps we both played the same one at one point in the past, what could give me an idea of what you mean precisely with "dull" or "flat". Perhaps it's just a misunderstanding. That's why I ask concerning the series numbers of these dull sounding Dumblelands you met. Or do you perhaps even have some clips of these dull amps?

Cheers and all the best

I understand what you're saying, but I also understand what Brandon is saying all too well. I never got into it for commercial purposes, and so I shared with a lot of people for the asking, dating back to 10 years ago. Most everyone was polite in return and some were neutral, but a couple of people showed their true colors -- and they are still kissing my ass as far as I'm concerned. Brandon is in another category all by himself and, to this day, he has not ceased to amaze me with the gratefulness he's shown to me and the generosity he has extended to everyone else. How many people have posted tutorials on how to build things, shared part numbers, offered kits at cost, facilitated cabinets and chassis, and even went as far as offering speakers at cost to the masses? I don't know how long you've been around this forum, but while in theory perhaps I would have made the same point you brought up point, the whole thing goes a lot deeper than the way I see it being portrayed in this thread. Just look at past posts and count how many amp makes share here, then you can put a list of how many amp makes hang and/or lurk here. I have a good idea of the answer, and it ain't pretty.

Cheers,

Gil

Hi tictac,

If you use the "search" function you can look at what Brandon posted over the last years. Read, and then read again what you posted here. Then you may perhaps feel how you blush by shame.

Max,

I'm afraid we have a misunderstanding here. I have tried the DL phase inverter (PI) and the 12ax7 with cathode follower in a butchered superreverb amp and based my conclusions on that. I agree that the amp is the sum of the different circuit parts and that things cannot just be transplanted and work great in a system without adapting other parts of the amp (like for instance LNFB).

Flat to me is a flat frequency response. Compared to the DL PI, the 12ax7 PI is more emphasized on the high end of the spectrum to my humble ears.

All the best,
