Greenback sound on a 10"

Hello,

I'm trying to put together a 2x10 cab. I know Celestion has a 10" greenback. Anything out there from other manufacturers that comes close to a G12M but is a 10" speaker?

Scumback has a couple really good options.

Thanks! For some reason when I went there earlier I only saw one 10" speaker...the scumnico. Anyway, I did check again and saw they have other 10's. Looks like the 10M75 is the greenback style speaker.

And if Jim's 10" greenback speaker is anywhere near as good as his 12" speakers then it'll be a winner. The Scumback M75s rule!

Man, I haven't had much luck finding speakers smaller than 12" that sound good.

To be honest I haven't tried that hard but I had a couple that either farted out or were much too shrill.

I just got a couple of Eminence 10516s. I am still waiting for the 2x10 cab that I ordered, so I've only tried the speaker on a 1x10 cab. I like the speaker a lot, so far. I just hope it sounds even better in a 2x10. I also have a 10" Jensen Neo in my Reverend Goblin and I like that too. But now I prefer the 10516s.

I'm also looking to experiment with a 2x10 british sounding cab. That's why I'm looking into greenback style 10s. Could not find an Eminence version of it though.

I'm pretty sure I read in the "Trainwreck Pages" that Ken's all time favorite speakers were old pre-rola G10's. I can't point you to the article or place that I read it, so take this with a grain of salt. I have the same prejudice against 10's. I've never played an amp or through a cabinet with 10's that I've liked (at least compared to good 12's). However, I've heard some awesome lower gain tones through a local player's black face vibrolux reverb.

After reading about Ken's praise for old Celestion 10's, I've been on the hunt for a couple. I haven't found them yet, so I'm pretty close to pulling the trigger on a pair of Scumback 10's. I've been really skeptical about the use of 10's for higher gain amps but I've decided to give them an unbiased try to see how they fit with my ever growing collection of 12's. I've also started picking up some 15's that have a great deal of promise. If I like the g10's I think I'm going to try a 2x cab with one 15 and one 10.

Are you using more gain than the two clips I've got for my SA10M75 clips? I thought (maybe incorrectly) that this was enough gain for most folks to decide if the 10M's could handle it. Let me know if not.

Tone Tubby 10's? Once 10's are housebroken they work rather well. Whereas 12's seem to be good to go from the start - CRUNCH - though as some 12's age they get a little flabby ... that's what the bass cut is for.

Earlier today I was putting the heat to my 410 classic 50 (all original parts). I can't believe I haven't had to re-tube it for as hard as I used to drive the old girl. I've had that amp since the early 90's and it gets better with age.

P.S. Keep in mind as well, stock 10 inch speakers tend to be ceramic which tend to get bright in a hurry.

No sir, I don't. I'm in the process of borrowing amps from different manufacturers to add new sound clips on my site. I should be able to get a 410 Bassman from a friend. It's going to be a few weeks till that happens, though.

I'm doing Wreck/Komet type clips next week.

I really can't recommend Southbay Ampworks...enough, that is.

I called them to see if they had a 10" that would complement my G1265 well for a Dumble tone, and they asked what I thought needed reinforcing. Based on what I said, they sold me a speaker, and I've been very pleased with it. I just bought a Jensen 10" Blackbird to try out, and I like it a lot...but it was pricey, and I'm not sure I like it better than the Scumback.

Give them a try...they know what they're doing.
