Flying Wreck

Post by gahult »

Pretty sure I can get your help on this one. Will be appreciated. :)

Has anyone flown with a Wreck as checked baggage?
Other than an Anvil case what would be the best way to protect it for a flight from MI to Atlanta?
I don't feel up to a drive down there but, would like to take "Cindy" down to my son if we fly down for a visit.

Nothing set yet, just thinking about going down for the grandson's birthday.
$59.00 per person +tax+fees one way is not a bad price ($236 total).
Will mull it over if I can get some thoughts. :D

Thank's

Gary
In the 60's people took acid to make the world weird. Now the world is weird , and they take Prozac to make it normal.

Not specific to 'Wrecks, but for electronics in general -

Pack your rig in a box with enough padding/foam/peanuts/whatever to make you feel that no matter how fragile it couldn't possibly be broken. In this case, your Anvil case probably has that covered.

Now, pack your first box or case in a bigger box. Use enough padding/foam/peanuts/whatever.... (see above) as though the box was the fragile object. It makes an oversized package, but that always gives me the warm fuzzy feeling that the fragile electronics are floating around in enough "squishy stuff" to avoid harm.

My first HF ham tranceiver came to me this way from over 400 miles away on a bus! It was old and tired, but suffered no ill effects from the trip.

Also, I would recommend removing the tubes and packaging them separately - they could go in your carry-on, but you might have to explain to security what they're for. I work at an airport, and I find those pre-board screening guys to be for the most part humorless :D

Good luck,

W

Gary,

I packed an Express in a regular suitcase with protective packing (tubes out of course) like Wayne suggests all the way to the UK with absolutely no problem. An Anvil / ATA case would be probably better, but very expensive for a one-time thing..

Gary, I hope surgery went well.

I think if you contact the airline to get a declaration you can pack that amp and not have to worry about them get suspicous about electronic parts inside.

But Ron and others have been through this and I have not, probably isn't necessary. I hope you go on the trip and have some fun Gary.

It's smaller than most carry on bags, but with a bum shoulder, I guess that would be out of the question  You might make your package is waterproof, in case Capt. Sully wants to try a water landing  Is there any water near Atlanta :?:
