What would you build...

Post by DonP »

If you had a 320-0-320 tranny that can deliver 85ma?

Taps for 5v 3a and 6.3v 3.2a.

I'm not sure if the HT current is enough to support a pair of 6V6 or EL84s.

Thanks.

You can use a choke-cap configuration coming off the rectifier and probably get your voltages down around 300 volts for a single ended 6V6/EL84/6AQ5 build. I've never run a guitar amp with a choke in the psu before the first filter cap, but 85ma is really only enough for a single-ended amp, and without the choke, your voltages will be too high (450-ish) for a good SE amp imo, while the LC filter's noise rejection will be beneficial to an SE amp..

Forget everything I just said. Use a 5Y3 and build SE 6V6.

I was thinking the 5Y3 would drop some of that voltage. I have some 3H chokes as well.

No chance of a push pull pair, huh?

You can try a 6K6 or 6K6G. They are not hard to find. Brandon (bludotone) has had some success with this tube.

Yep, for the preamp, I'm pretty much hooked on the 2203. I have a 2.5 watt version using a 50C5 and a 35W4 rectifier.

A KT88 might be hard to pull off.

Allen is just down the road from me (well, maybe 40+ miles).

Has anyone tried one of these? It's very similar to my 2.5 watt build, except that I went with the cathode follower before the tone stack. I like the feedback - I'd be tempted to wire in a presence control.

You wouldn't want to use a KT88 with only 85mA to play with (an EL34 would be cutting it really close, too), but I think a 6L6 would be rockin' :D
