KMD amplifier info **pics added**

Post by Blindog »

I can get hold of a KMD XV100 SD 100 watt head pretty cheap. It's probably late 80's, all tube, 4x6550, made in England. I'm trying to find a schematic for it to fix the reverb and for general modding fun. Can't find anything on Google. Anyone have any experience with these beasts? Supposedly this was their flagship amp. I can snag it for $225. Sound like a deal?

Thanks

Mark

I see what you mean when you Google the name, zilch.

What does the KMD stand for?

Tom,

I don't know what the KMD stands for. I seem to remember someone telling me they were affiliated with Laney at one point. I think Kaman music was their brand as well. Nothing on Kaman either.

I've played the amp and other than the verb everything works. I couldn't get the tubes and trannys for what I can buy this for. I'd like to make this into a HRM ODS with BM stack and PI

Go for it. Even if you end up completely re-manufacturing the thing,
your correct, you cant gather the parts at that price point.

Thanks for that link Gary. From what I've read KMD has been long out of business, and the former distributer, Kaman Music, doesn't have any info on their website. I still may shoot them an email to see if I can get hold of a schematic.

Found a picture below on a Myspace page.

If you google the full model name and brand you'll get some relevant links. Mostly they are to forum posts that talk about how bad they sound. I don't know if this model is what they are talking about. Apparently there is a hybrid SS preamp tube power amp KMD that most people hated. To me, I'd buy the thing for the parts at that price. Even if it's a SS preamp, you can always change that and you've still got a massive OT for tube PA, cabinet, etc. all for a great price.

Yeah, I found those forum posts too after some more in depth searching. I've acually been inside the amp..it's the all tube model. PC boards of course. It does have some nice looking iron inside there. REALLY heavy!
I think I'll go for it. Still would like to find a schematic. Thanks for all the input!

You could always gut it and build something decent.

My buddy had a pair of their PA speakers. Worst boat anchors I've ever heard.

Wow good score!

That looks really clean inside.
Nice simple layout compared to a lot of pcb amps.

So is this a guitar amp or what? Does it work?

What are your plans for it?

Tom,

It's a guitar amp. This model was actually endorsed by Richie Sambora back in the day. (who knows if he really used 'em or not) I good friend of mine in the the retail music biz told me they were made in the Laney factory, though I can't confirm that.

I was surprised on how clean the layout was too. Nice LCR caps as well! It does work, with the exception of the reverb. It's got one of those tiny reverb tanks. It also looks like it has 2 effects loops, one for each channel from what I can tell. I'll have tp play around with it.

I got this as a platform to either mod or gut and do a ODS HRM Bluesmaster. I've been jones'n to build one since I did my 50w non hrm Fender Bassman10 conversion.

I found a place online where I can get a schematic and layout/parts list for $15. I think that would be a good investment.

Where is that?
Isn't there enough info and stuff here to do all that for free?

Most definitley! I want to get the schematic for the amp in it's current state for a roadmap so I can easily tell which way I think I should go  Sorry I wasn't more clear on that!

Nah it was me that didn't understand.
I tend to skim too much.

Good luck on the rebuild. :D
