What speaker have you had success with in an open back cab?

Post by markmalin »

Any thoughts? I'm curious about open back cabinets or combos - what has worked well and what hasn't.

Thanks for your opinions ;)
Mark.

No kidding? I tried one of these once and was quite impressed but had stuck in my head that I HAD to get a Celestion G12-65. What do you like about the Blackbird? Any negatives?

Speakers choices are very personal.

Nice balance and a warm for a 100 watt speaker.
It seems to sit between the Celestion blues and P12n styles in a good way.
I've used it live now for about 5-6 months and very happy with it. It Also mics well not too harsh.

Maybe a little soft sounding compared to a EV or the like

My choices for an open back.

Celestions

G1265 (mu number one pick)
CL80 (not as much bass as the 65)
G12-120 (rare speaker, but pretty cool)

Eminence

Red, White and Blues

Eletrovoice 12L

I tried a Jensen C12K and the top end hurt my teeth :).

I have a Jensen Tornado and Blackbird that I still need to evaluate as well as a couple of Scumbacks.

I like your quote on the C12k ;)

The Jensen rep at CE Dist. is sending me a Blackbird, a P12N, a Neo Tornado and a Mod 1250. It will be interesting to see how they compare. I sure wish I could get ahold of a Celestion G12H 30 70'th Annivesary. I played a Rivera combo that had one and it had the tone and feel I'm looking for - but I realize that's a way different amp.

When you get to the Blackbird, let us know what you think of it.

Thanks for the input,
Mark.

I have three open back cabs:

1. 212 Celestion blues good for clean amps only

2. 212 Celestion Vintage 30s good for clean and with my Rocket, Liverpool and Express. Takes sustain well and high gain.

3. 212 Celestion 12H with Celestion 25w greenback

Built another larger cab running 2-10s Carvin and 2-12s Carvin. It is open back not as large as a 4x12 but bigger than the typical Fender 4x10 cab.

Also have 2 4x12 peavey cabs that I am experimenting right now with some Peavet speakers and eminence.

Pretty much the same here. I'm liking RWBs more than I used to. A very close match to the G1265 tones for less bucks. I've done plenty of critical listening and recording comparing G1265s to RWBs and EV-12L to Delta Pro and have found them to be comparable - except for the upper highs. The 1265 and 12L outperform their lesser counterparts there in spades. Posted some of these before but here are some sloppy comparisons:

Mark, where abouts are you in Minnesota? Just curious how close you are to Madison, WI. It would be interesting to try some of these out.

I'd like to try a 1-12 open Celestion G12H 70th aniversary, and a 1-12 open back Celestion Vintage 30.

So these are all open back cabinets, then? I look forward listening.

Oops! All speakers except the 12L. I believe that was in a TL box at the time. Delta Pro was in an open back.

Fair warning on the 30 watt anniversary... A good sounding speaker.. Especially for that clean on the verge breakup..A bit on the bright side yet plenty smooth and nothing a little more NFB wouldn't cure...So far Iv'e blown 3 of them... Several Nashville guy's has had the same issues with them and can't use them on the road..When mine went they were with 50 watt amps up fairly loud but not so loud that I thought the speaker couldn't handle it...This was a year ago so maybe they straighten those issues out..
If you don't play very loud a good sounding speaker..
