Dynacord Twen; more???

Post by Bernardduur »

Hey all!

I just got in the posession of a Dynacord Twen amp..... great little amp with 1 12" speaker that sounds a tad like the Fender Deluxe amps........

Schematic

And although it is quite a nice amp with a very unique sound and a great tremolo system it lacks the headroom for me...... same with the volume. I would love the amp to have a bit "more"...........

What would be the options? Mod it? Get everything from her and build a new circuit in it?

Does yours look like this inside?

Doesn't appear to be much room for a circuit board if you tore out all the PTP stuff.

Your best bet would be to probably just change the electrolytic caps, install a 3 prong cord and call it good.

I suppose you could alter the bias on the 6V6 tubes and or change some values in the tone stack.
Strange not to have bypass caps and or very big couplers.

The input is also pretty low impedance compared to modern amps with 1meg inputs.

If you really want more headroom, you could convert it to fixed bias and DC bias the phase inverter...

Haha, that's mine!

I wanted to change the caps and more so that's an OK! It already has an 3 prong cable

OK!

I'll try em!

I was also thinking of converting it to 6L6, more because I have some of em laying around......... I can imagine to change the OT but could the PT still be used?

Some extra info I found

Sorry don't read, uh, whatever that is.

Well 6L6 draw twice the heater current so you may be in trouble there unless you go with a separate filament transformer.

Haha, I usually forget I can switch between languages :D

I've DC'ed bias the phase inverter and that results in some more headroom

But today I found out that the main issue with this amp is the speaker; on my 4x10 I get more headroom, better sounds and a nice OD / breakup..... old speaker is just bad I guess :D

Would adding a fixed bias add more headroom (and why :))?

Hi Bernaduur,

do you like the sound of the amp? If you change to fixed bias you'll probably get 2-4 Watts extra at the expense of loosing the original sound. Change electrolytical capacitors and check some speakers.

To keep the weight low - it's only 10kg (!) - you could try high efficiency neodyms...btw: deluxe reverb is 22kg iirc. Efficient speakers will easily get you some clean headroom (+4-6dB are possible, equalling ~50W ooutput). Speakers do change the sound, though.

Same is with the input section. Change in values changes sound.

Be gentle with that little German amp, it cannot be modded to a TWIN. That's why they called it TWEN.

Haha, thanks!

She is awesome now...... I only need to upgrade the speaker, then she'll be done. I swapped the tubes as the heater voltage was really high...... brought that down with the voltage selector switch.

Dunno if I'll add a fixed bias as then I have to change the tremolo section also.

Any nice speaker thoughts? I put some 10" Eminence in my Dumble / JW and that really nailed my sound. So I think I'd like some Eminence in this one too :D

Hi!

It depends largely on your sound "vision" :?
and a bit on your purse :D

I prefer little amps w. large&loud speakers. My Princeton derivative has a 15" Eminence legend
Eminence offers nearly anything. No JBLs, EVs though
Eminence Tonker lite is -yes- lite, dunno if you'd like it.
There's an 35 W alnico, too. Choices.

I'd even try the more british voiced wizard. Not your classical Fender speaker.
Sorry, no easy answer.

Search for "deluxe reverb" and "speaker". duh! You knew that.
Telecaster forum?

Where do you usually buy your stuff? Maybe some hints from their side or some testing possible. Since your multilingual, you probably know tubetown. Lots of info on Dirk's site regarding speakers and eminence.
(I am not affiliated, just a happy customer. Hope its OK for the garage people).

Thanks!

I tried some Eminence speakers at the person that imports Eminence here in my town. He didn't have that much speakers but in the end the Wizard really blew me away.

So I think I'll go with that one :D
