Barbara Dennerlein, (jazz content)

Post by skyboltone »

Yeah, I know this is a guitar haunt but I got this thing going for this jazzer.

Is it just about the sex or do you find her as as overwhelming in her musicianship as I do?

She's great, has been around awhile, and has several records out. Dennis kills it also. I get a tear in my eye when I watch a clip like this. A simple tune and she and dennis r rippin it to shreds. Too bad the rest of the clip ain't there, mitch plays great also--

Yeah, but....but.... you saw how she tired out toward the end and had to let the drummer carry it for 4 or 5 seconds
What is it with women and multitasking :?: She's runnin' these continuous 32th note riffs with here right hand, compin' with the left hand, and runnin' an 8th note walkin' bass line with her left foot, while thinkin', "I need to adjust this little box up on top of the B3."
All the while, dodgin' those two hatchets hangin' from here ears :? I expected her to draw blood any second.
I mean.....DAMN :!: :?

As much as I respect her talent, I just can't get into this stuff. I love B3 tones, but she seems to only use the percussion with gets old fast. She kicks bass ok, but I've seen better. The constant 8th notes is pretty boring, plus she's right foot toe only, no heal, no right foot, pretty limiting.

I must be getting old, I really prefer a Jimmy Smith type B3 to this. Another favorite was Billy Preston, a damn fine B3 organist, Lee Michaels was a pretty underrated organist as well.

I agree that it must be an exhausting performance. I kicked bass on organ pedals for about 15 years doing singles duo's trios etc, but playing guitar. Some weeks my left leg would hurt so bad I'd limp. I'll admit I never used right foot either which really limited me but I can't walk and chew gum at the same time. My excuse was I only had an 18 note board, not the 25 like a B3, pretty poor excuse.

It is GREAT though to see the B3 used again. I really miss that instrument.

1+ on Jimmy Smith 8) There was more dynamic to his playing. More soul :!:
She's more like a Malmsteen on organ. I guess I mainly am jealous of her neuromuscular physiology :? I'd like to be able to play those notes that fast and then have the good sense to weed out about 90% of them :D

Obviously Jimmy Smith is the origin of this style. I don't think it's quite fair to judge this woman's talent based on one Youtube clip. One does get a fair idea of some of her other attributes however. But then again tastes vary. She's got about 6 albums out as near as I can tell including some Bach improv stuff.

If she comes to the Bay Area for a concert, I'm going! After all, Mr. Smith is more or less a "has been" in a neuromuscular sense.

I watched about 10 youtube vids of her. I agree, she's got amazing skills, but it's just not my style. I get lost in the Yngwie'ness of it.

Amazing playing. The tone is in the feet.

What amazes me as well is he does it in street shoes. Heel toe technique like that is usually taught in some type of slippers, ballet style mostly. I played pedals in socks only which I was told is bad for your feet but I could feel the keys better.

Great stuff!!

Yeah, her foot work was amazing!

My aunt used to play a big organ in church when I was a kid and her foot work was cool too, but she wasn't playing 1/8 notes on it.

That chick is very good but I would much rather her play with some feeling instead of how many notes she can fit into a bar.
