Getting that Dumble or D Clone Tone?

Re: Getting that Dumble or D Clone Tone?
The 100k resistor acts like a bit like a "loudness" switch. It provides a little more girth when playing at bedroom levels. Might get a little boomy at gig levels, though.
As for the input trimmer, I never measure resistance to ground. I set the input volume at 2 o'clock, OD gain at 9 o'clock, and adjust the trimmer until I can just begin to get some dirt while digging in on an open chord. Not very scientific, but it works for me. Generally, the trimmer will be sitting between 10 and 11 o'clock using this method. YMMV

I wanna hear
Can you post links to the clips?
I just listened to the clips on this page:
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default ... idID=77276
And man..to my ears those have none of the midrange clarity that I listen for, waaaay to much reverb, too much gain for the classic Dumbly tones in my head, and no demonstration of how the amp rolls over into feedback...I'm thinking these are not the clips we're discussing.
I'm not saying they sound shitty, just not nailing the 'Dumble sound' to my ears.

Helpful info. I assume that's set up for one guitar? I'm I dreaming to hope to get a good setup for both SC and Humbuckers type guitars?Normster wrote: As for the input trimmer, I never measure resistance to ground. Well not necessarily that clip. There was one, I can't find it right now and I don't know who was playing but it didn't have that muffled tone that Tag has in that clip.brownnote wrote:I wanna hear![]()

I'm not even sure of the exact model of TR he was playing but it had some really nice harmonic bloom that if he held any note it would go into a harmonic.
I don't necessarily want that all the time. I think it would be kind of annoying to have it feed back like that all the time.
I guess I have this tone in my head and I'm not currently getting it, if that makes sense.
I love this amp Moss, it's my #1 for sure. I just want to tailor the tone to my liking.
I guess I should really get some better speakers before I much of anything else. I will put the choke in for sure.

Structo, could it also be something to do with the differences (read 'girth' etc) between 50W and 100W amps? From my own experiences, having tried various TR amps, the 100 watters were much more open and what I was expecting to hear from a D*mble style clone.
Just a thought
.
Cheers, Paul.

Re: Getting that Dumble or D Clone Tone?
I just modded a sf fender bassman into a non hrm ODS, and it is just as thick and full as any 100w i've done, it just clips sooner at loud volume.
Re: Getting that Dumble or D Clone Tone?
Yes I have considered that. But I have heard plenty of clips of other D'Lites, Ceriatones, and other 50 watt clones that had the tone I want.Guitarman18 wrote:Structo, could it also be something to do with the differences (read 'girth' etc) between 50W and 100W amps? I am not really that frustrated over this whole deal, because it is fun to meddle with the workings of these amps.
I just wish there was a definitive set of values that one could say, here, put these in and it will sound like this.

Re: Getting that Dumble or D Clone Tone?
Yes, but have you been able to produce the tone you want, playing through any amp? Unless/until you can answer "yes" to this, all this fiddling with the amp might just be an exercise in tail-chasing. I remember reading a post by one of the guys on the Hoffman forum who builds a lot of amps, saying basically that he couldn't get That Sound when he started building D-style amps, but having customers come in (seriously good pro players) and try the amps, and they were able to get it right off the bat.Structo wrote: I have heard plenty of clips of other D'Lites, Ceriatones, and other 50 watt clones that had the tone I want.

Tom,
What speakers are you using?

Two good points.
I'm sure the type III is great, that clip wasn't the tone I was expecting, but I can certainly see why someone would like it.
Then there's the player...some guys have a tone in mind and seem to be able to get it to a recognizable degree across a variety of amps.

Re: Getting that Dumble or D Clone Tone?
Most established players sound relatively the same thru whatever they're playing . I have several friends who play much different styles- that do it.
You play to your sound, and if u can't get it, it's frustrating. With a new amp, you're trying to find your own sound in it.
How long to keep the smoke in, what's the formula?

Re: Getting that Dumble or D Clone Tone?
Tom, I was able to open up a Jet this past summer.
- - 220k/150k plate, on V1 and V2 with the typical 3.3k/2.2k cathode resistors.
- The V1a bypass cap was weird. 1uF. I don't see the wire going to V1a, but, it's in the front position.
- I couldn't see the values of the other bypass or tone capacitors.
- 150k slope and 150k FET simulator resistors.
- 100k to unknown cap pre OD.
- After V2a, well I just don't recognize what's going on there.

Re: Getting that Dumble or D Clone Tone?
I take it that is a Two Rock Jet?
Man, $3,300 for those!
Do they use formica boards on all their amps?
