I did a whole AB test of output transformers and Hammond ended up at the bottom of the list. Didn't test the particular transformer you mentioned, but from my results I wouldn't even bother with them.

thanks, I have one sitting here and thought I would try it as a replacement for the heyboer marshall output I picked up from weber vst. This is for an "express" I built using 6sl7 in the preamp. I'm curious what you would recomend, thanks again

Heyboer, although I personally do like Mercury.

Does anyone here know what the Rocket transformer really is? Shall I tell a secret? Let's keep this thread real quiet.

I, for one, would really like to know.
Wife: How many amps do you need?
Me: Just one more...

Well, it's a VERY common 35-watt HiFi output transformer, which maybe isn't a secret??? It's easily available, right on eBay today, and you can build a real nice amp around it. They cost about $75 used, but there's two changes Ken made to it, and what those changes were I won't reveal. I suppose Heyboer and certainly Pacific know what those changes are, and probably Two Rock (or was it TopHat?) that had Pacific wind some clones for them and might be the basis of that company's amps. I think it was Two Rock. Funny, guys who know will be surprised that I don't know. Point is, I don't really care. I'm not selling what I know, nor am I using it (right now!), and I'm certainly not going to give it away.

It seems the best trans to use would be the Heyboers from Tone Slut? But you can build a real nice amp with Mercurys too, or Albions (VOX). It won't sound the same as a 'Wreck, but is it the 'Wreck tone you're actually after? Or just a good sounding amp? Or is it owning an amp when you can't afford a real one? Ken had no problem with you building anything you want.... for yourself..... and NOT using the Logo or name. So I see clones with Trainwreck logos on them and I, and ALL the collectors I'm sure, are offended. I'm even offended by the Trainwreck logo I saw on a Climax. It shows what an ass he is.

I just don't know for sure unless I take one of the Heyboers apart, or they tell me. But it's like a game of bluff. Who goes first? Do they tell me what it is? Or do I tell them? Maybe they're not keeping what they're winding a secret, or maybe they are, or maybe they're winding it wrong? I just don't know. I don't lurk around here so I don't really know what you guys know, or don't...???

Can you guess what it is? Or did you already know?

I also have to say that two companies winding the same transformer, will sound different.

Since you guessed, yes, it's a modded Dynaco A470. One of the first things Ken told me.

Good Iron

Post by Macshaft »

I used the 1750V hammond Vox AC30 replacement tranny in my Rocket clone, and it sounds awesome . The bass is phenominal , don`t think it would be enough for the Express though at only 30watts , what about Edcor ?? do they make something in that output range ?? I have heard good things about their product line .

Another amp build and the Wife will put a contract out on me

never tried to make an exact copy, just a great sounding amp, that's why I went with the 6sl7, so I didn't copy. What about a dynaco a470 in an express circuit? To big of impedence mismatch? I used the 17 what version of the dynaco in a 15 watt liverpool/rocket I built and it sound right on. thanks again

Dave,

OK, you got me. I know you won't reveal the Mods he made to the A470.
My question is , Did he use an off the shelf Dynaco or had them special ordered?

BTW, years ago I bought some Linear Crystal guitar cables from you. They did indeed sound better than any other cable I have ever used . The difference was not that subtle either. I believe you were using it to wire amps at the time.

Nope. The 1650G has some pretty useless 250/500-ohm secondaries besides the quite usual 3.5/8/16-ohm. I've tried the 1650PA (larger core, heavier iron) and it worked fine in an Express-style amp.

The most common - if anything Trainwreck can be common - would be what is now the Heyboer HTS-8093-1. Hifi iron based on the Dyna A-470 w/o UL taps and wound Acro-style with a slightly different interleaving.

its just bull that Hammond OT sounds bad

Post by breakfastbuddy »

but some people are thinking that , the more the parts cost the better they sound , use your ears not just look at the cost of the parts . look at this nice amp and it sounds good using a Hammond OT .
