AlNiCo or Ceramic 4 ohm 8" for Champ???

Post by lakehaus »

I'm restoring a little Vibro Champ - just getting into the cosmetics right now. Guts are next after I rebuild the baffle and install the speaker. The speaker that came with it is not original... I don't know what it is... so it'll be replaced - it's ugly, hardly any magnet, and it looks like an old TV speaker.

From your experience, what have you had luck with? Any brand better than the next in the <$50 range? I'll be playing a Tele and Strat thru this for practice when I'm done.

Thanks in advance!

I know a lot of guys like the Webers for the smaller amps compared to the Jensens.
What size does the VC use?

I recently used the Weber Chicago Vintage 10" in a 5F2A style build, and it's great. These Chicago Vintage speakers have chemically aged cones, so they sound great right out of the box. The CVA8 is the 8" size in this line.

It's an 8" speaker... I read Weber's are good - the Blue and/or Sig 8...

Is that AlNiCo or ceramic magnet? Does it matter really? Any advantage to either?

CVA is Chicago Vintage Alnico

IMHO, alnicos are the thing to get IF you plan on pushing the speaker with near it's recommended wattage, to take advantage of the compression it offers when running hard. I think that's why some many wee wattage amps of your record so well--you can crank the snot out of 'em and squeeze every last bit o' mojo out of those alnico speakers!

I'm a little late on this but you better make sure that the Alnico will fit.....with the bell on the back the speaker may be too deep. I'd call Weber and talk to Ted.

yes I have heard of those issues with the combos.

Sometimese you have to take the magnet cover off in order to fit.

I picked up the Sig 8 last night... I have the amp all apart now, so I guess the moment of truth will have to come later! Thanks for the heads-up though.

I don't think that the 8" has a bell on it - the one that I bought for my blackface Champ doesn't.
