uf values for PS filter caps

Quick question for anyone who is willing

How do designers arrive at the uf value for powersupply caps?
I understand the voltage rating, but what about capacitance?
I understand that there is some variation in different clones especially with the 80uf caps ( 1st in line)

Its a balance of a couple of things. The more capacitance the less AC ripple noise, but too much and the amp will sound less musical. Also, the amount of capacitance will play a role in tight or loose bass response. Those are the results of what I have found with my experimenting.

Markusv, I would look at Randall Aiken's site. He has a tech page section that covers alot of tube amp theory. I did alot of reading before my first build and slowly, it is starting to sink in.

Good suggestion
I'll do that too. I have been reading as much as possible, and it does slowly make more sense- I have NO tech background. Given my fascination with these things, I wonder what I was thinking when I chose my career.

It might help some of the reading sink in. You can change values in a power supply and see how response changes graphically. It helped me to visualize.
