Hey Omar...

Post by snide »

Are those sozo caps I see on your metro amps board? Also, I know you haven't had alot of time to judge the sound of the amp, but what is your opinion of the tone so far? I have a 50 watt Laney that I have thought about transplanting a metro amp board into and also swapping the OT with a nice plexi OT. How much gain does your amp have and also the big question, can it get the brown sound? Sorry for all the questions :)

Eric - This is my first experience with a plexi (real, reissue or clone) and I'm suprised at how clean it is. As expected it's loud as hell. I can't stand in front of the 4x12 with the volume above 5 and I worry about the speakers in my 1973 Marshall cab.

I would not say it has the brown sound right out of the box but I have not tried to goosed the front end with an EQ pedal either. The tone is definately clean and in your face and I'm surprised at how bright the amp is.

As for the Sozo's, I have probably put in 5 hours on the amp so I'm still quite a ways from breaking them in. I'm a bit skeptical about the breaking in thing with the Sozo's but I'll listen and see if I notice anything.

Snide,

Doesn't Metroamp have an EVH board (with supposed EVH's plexi values) that you can buy?

Omar,

Which board did you choose (superlead, superbass, etc.)?

My plexi clone has the Superlead split cathode board (circa 1969).

erigm,
I think they do, I haven't looked at their site in awhile. For me, I'm a little worried some of their boards won't have enough gain. Oh well, I can always add some :D

There's supposedly a big cap on the second stage cathode on the VH amp--like 330uF or so. That'll give you an overall gain boost. Lessening the fdbk. (increasing the fdbk. R value), increasing the presence cap, and maybe using the 560pF value seen in some amps for the bright cap should give more gain. Also the bigger value bright cap on the volume pot (about 5000pF) too. Try stuff out, have fun!

I love the soZo caps. I tried just about everything out there ... Mallory, Orange Drop, Solen, Aura Cap, and soZos. The soZos are the closest to my original mustards. Overall they are a tad clearer.

I can definitely hear them break in after 8 hours or so. I would describe the new caps (whole new board actually) as "blurry". After a break in period they became much clearer. You can hear it on the bass notes if you palm mute. At first they go "Bsh, bsh, bsh" then they transform into "chunk, chunk, chunk". :)
