I'm wondering too,...maybe Dogears or Funk know??
Taming a bluesmaster HRM,...
Re: Robben Ford's "Handfull of Blues" HRM or Non HRM
I have no data, but I think HRM just based on the tone I get from mine. Also remember Robben likes to mix in the Twin as well so it's not 100% Dumble tone, some tone comes from the Fender as well.

Which song?
The Intro Riff on "Rugged Road" is a Skyline with Standard OD
"Miller's Son" sounds like an HRM to me
Some of the other tunes sound like a bluesmaster- He doesn't just use his own amps, He uses Jackson Brownes black suede amp as well as steve trovato's amp- could be any of the above

Interesting. Miller's Son is one of my yardsticks. great tone, great playing and energy. I'd assumed that the differences in tone was his mixing of different amps along with his Dumbles but it makes since that he'd use different amps.Funkalicousgroove wrote:Which song?

Yeah ya never know what they use in the studio, unless they document it.
Remember when everybody was rushing out to buy Marshalls and LP's to get the Jimmy Page vibe?
Then we find out he was using a Supro and a Tele in the studio? LOL

I believe that set up was for another album that came out much later as I recall, correct me if I am wrong there are pix on the web somewhere from that sessionFunkalicousgroove wrote:- He doesn't just use his own amps, He uses Jackson Brownes black suede amp as well as steve trovato's amp- could be any of the above
Robben got his then "new" amp -93-94 (according to himself)before that it had no HRM
but again he did use other amps working in studio as everybody else ,fender etc
on the Jing chi studio session he even used a real Marshall for some stuff , I think it was Daved who mentioned that

The release date on that CD was 9/12/95, I have a friend that has 2 ODS's, Purchased from Alexander in the early 90's. His second one was ordered as "The Robben ford thing"
What he recieved was a 100W Skyline EQ amp with Music Man Trannies. That amp sounds Identical to the tone on "Rugged Road" No HRM in that one
The tones on Rugged Road vs Miller's Son are vastly different.
I have a friend in LA that has known Alexander for many years, he used to go see robben play in the 80's and robben would be using his dumble and one he had borrowed from Andy Brauer.

Re: Robben Ford's "Handfull of Blues" HRM or Non HRM
checked out two different amps way back in the mid 90s the cool thing is they were both supposed to be "the RF tweaks" both guys got them straight from Mr D , these amps actually had slight differenies in their circuits, had different trannies etc one had choke the other didnt, they did however sound very similar as I recall
so I am a strong believer that he "built a sound" rather than exact circuits when such request were made,

Very interesting stuff, Brandon. I have not heard a non-HRM with Music Man iron in person so can't comment on that, but I do think that 'Strong Will to Live' sounds like a Bluesmaster, so there you go.Funkalicousgroove wrote:Which song?

And does anyone know how he actually uses the Twin in his rig? On the Rockpalast videos, it sounds like he's mostly using the Zen into the Twin, but of course, I could be wrong about that.

Wonder if it had 221K/150K plates or the 100K like #167 and if it used EL34s or not? What he recieved was a 100W Skyline EQ amp with Music Man Trannies. That amp sounds Identical to the tone on "Rugged Road" No HRM in that one
I attached a rough sketch (very rough!) of how a MM supply in an ODS could look like. I'm pretty sure about everything except the Bias portion of it. Looks like a voltage reg should be put in there to power the relays. Hmm...

Re: Robben Ford's "Handfull of Blues" HRM or Non HRM
The amps that I have seen without chokes usually had a particular type of Iron in them and the reason they don't have a choke is because the amp they came out of didn't have a choke.
I know that both of Robben's amps have chokes now, they both have 100W or 135W twin PT's, and both have Magic Parts 100W twin OT's(tf135).

Arggghh, time to revise all the schema that cite a "Robben Ford mod" resistor in the power supply...Funkalicousgroove wrote:I know that both of Robben's amps have chokes now, they both have 100W or 135W twin PT's, and both have Magic Parts 100W twin OT's(tf135).
