OT for a Plexi 50 style amp

Post by Curbdog »

Hi - can anyone recommend an output transformer, and vendor, for a Plexi 50-style amp, with 4, 8 & 16 ohm taps? This amp currently has a Kendrick 2112 AHR OT in it. This one has a 6600 ohm primary, and only a single 8 ohm secondary. Looking for something with a vintage sound; I am not really a fast player, if that helps... Thanks !

Marstran sells fantastic Marshall trannies for a variety of models. I have his JTM45 trannies amnd they kill.

Ditto on the Marstran iron. Brian has some of the best iron available for Marshall builds and knows the history of what was used when if you need honest historical accuracy.

I have a scratch built JTM45 that has one of his OT's in it, and it kicks ass.

I haven't tried his 50W OT but George at Metroamp has a nice range of Heyboers made to his spec.

The Marstran ones are very well-renowned too.

Another ditto for marstran. I've got a full set of PT/OT/Choke in a JTM45 and they're great. He seems to be out of stock at the moment though.

Another option is the Hammond 1750N. It's $80 from angela.com, but I've never used one personally so I can't speak directly to it's quality. The MM Tone Clone series is also supposed to be really good, but pretty pricey. While not an exact replacement, a Hammond 1650K/1650KA would probably work pretty well.

Another vote for Marstran, I have his RS OT and am working on an amp now using the 784-128 http://www.marstran.com/50W%20OT%20128.htm
Just a note Brian offers two types of OT's for 50 watt Marshall's the early 784-128 and the later 748-139 OT. Ask Brian for the details

I'll have to say the Marstran is good stuff. I have Brian's RS OT in a JTM45 RI a buddy of mine upgraded for me. Sounds amazing!

I have a Bluesbreaker RI, I'm gonna upgrade myself. Gonna try George's (Metro Amp) this time.

Both are made by Heyboer, each to their own specs, based on real examples and many listening tests.

Interesting - I wonder if one of those would work with a 5F6A board set?

Marstran is still out of stock on the tranny I want. Worth the wait? Has anyone used the Metro Amps 50W Plexi OT and liked it? Thanks.
