Anyone using EL34 power stage ?

Post by pedro »

just wondering what impressions vs 6L6s ?

Currently I have TAD short bottle 6L6s in my 50W ODS build.

just looking at the s3988009.2 schem just now and noticed it had EL34s.

Any thoughts. Im shooting for Ford type tones .

cheers

I built an EL34 HRM, it's Fantastic. THe cleans are very transparent and hi-fi, the OD is like a great Marshall.

cheers Funk,

are the lead tones still Fordesque ?

I very much like the warm plexi cleans - wind cried mary etc , but shooting for Ford type leads.

Loving my non-HRM amp as it is - just got the tweaking disease I guess.
Incidentally just tried an old mullard ECC83 in my PI and it was awful - brittle as heck - just gone back to an EH12ax7 !!

I hate to break it to you Pete, Hendrix played that one through a SF Twin. In fact more of the studio work was Fender amps, Twin, Bassman, Tweed Bandmaster. He only used Marshalls for live for the volume. Legend has it he hated the tone.

I built one Dumble with EL-34's for a friend. I basically used the 97 schematic but didnt' use an HRM tone stack. The sound is fat and Marshall-y, quite different than a Dumble but somehow similar.
