Digital Oscilloscope

Lads - this looks like something useful to own.

Given a 10x probe is about $25.00 seems pretty cheap and way good enough for analog.

Just FYI

cheers

Yes there is some free stuff that works off your soundcard but you're not going to get even 20kHz through it.

100MHz for ~$100 seems pretty good in comparison.

But you're right - you get what you pay for.

I'd like to pick up an oscilloscope for amp building and troubleshooting, there are about a million Tektronix scopes on Ebay for a wide range of $, what specs should I be looking for? I'm willing to spend up to $400-500 for a good scope, but would be happy to spend less.

Along the same idea, can someone recommend a good book/resource for learning what can be done with an oscilloscope?

anything that has 2 channels, 100Mhz should do fine..calibrated and warantee would be a plus...like with anything else "you get what you pay for"

I use an old HP vacum tube scope (can't remember the model off hand) and it works just fine for audio....I payed $25 for it. 20 years ago it was probably worth $10k.'

Add another $100 or 200 to your budget and get something digial. That way you can save the waveforms/measurements to your PC for comparison ect.

I would recommend a USB connected scope. I use them in the field with my laptop, works like a charm.

If the sampling frequency is 100 MHz, the bandwidth is <50 MHz. Still not bad for 100 bucks. Is the software avaiable/free? The big advantage of the digital over an old analog is the ability to store/save traces. I'd be interested how robust the front ends are compared to a regular scope. I've done some nasty things to my HP
