What speakers are you guys using?

I'm currently using a '68 straight basket weave with 55hz G12M blackbacks. I've also got a '72 slant coming with original greenbacks ... three 75hz cones and one 55hz cone.

So the obvious missing part of the equation is the G12H30. I might try some out, but before I do, I thought I'd see what everyone else is using.

Can someone describe the differences with their TW builds. I know that there's a lot of high end with the TW so I'm wondering if it would be a bad combo with the G12H (which seems brighter and "harder" for lack of better words).

I'm no where near having one built, but would think the G12H would take your head off. I've been thinking more along the lines of Emi Governors (or that hemp coned ones) or Weber Blues.

I don't own a 4 x 12 cab but when I asked what speakers Ken recomended in another thread I was told a Marshall 4 x 12 cab with Greenbacks. I am using a 4 x 10 cab and have it loaded with Eminence Ramrods. I really like the sound and reports I am getting regarding the new Eminence line of Redcoat speakers. They did their homework and nailed the true british flavor. I would think a Govnor would sound great if it compares to my Ramrods. No I don't work for Eminence. I use to hate Eminence and had to be talked int trying one. I am now a convert.

hello there, yeah dana i believe in one of the gerald weber books there is section where ken talks about the celestion speakers he likes and says he also likes the old ampeg v-4 4-12 cabs to put them in. i have a marshall style 4-12 slant front cab that has some of the oem celestions that paul reed smith used in his cabs in the 90's. these are greenbacks with a 50w voice coil and sound killer with my express clone. they are just ever so slightly cleaner and less compressed sounding than 25w greenbacks. i believe warren haynes uses/used these in some of his cabs. i've thinking about swapping out 2 of them and trying a couple of scumback g12h clones with the 55hz cone. these are supposed to sound very nice and would probably sound good with the express circuit. rh

i have a 4x12 with Kustom 12's like 20+ years old...
other 4x12 has some prototypes that emminence did for a local amp builder who since quit building amps.. then started with anew name.. then stopped again... anyway.. speakers are way middy and kinda blow.. thus being prototype and not finals:)

I need to get some speakers bad to replace all these.. BUT i find it hard to justify the money when i have speakers that work:(

I play mine through a pair of Tone Tubbies hemp cone alnicos. I have tried it with my old Marshall cabs as well and the TT do a great job they take to the bright amp like a duck to water.

If I try G12Hs I think I'm going to try the 55hz cones. I hear they're a little more forgiving on the high end.

Hey I almost forgot. HebeGB just got in his stock of Sammi speakers. These things sound great in a Marshall 4 x 12 and are 1/2 the cost of Celestions. I think he is running a sale thru April. Richie replaced his celestions with 300B50s years ago and has never looked back. just a thought.

Gregs Sammis sound very good!!!! They are some of the best deals in speakers!

I just played my TW through my 4x12 Marshall 1960A with G12-65's and it sounded great! I'll try my 2x12 with greenbacks tomorrow.

I prefer my G12H in an open back with the express. It adds some bottom end punch that's really lacking otherwise. And, it doesn't make more high end. In fact, it's more balanced in an open cabinet to my ears. In a closed cabinet, that's not the case, however.

Makes sense to me, though. I've ALWAYS preferred the G12M in closed back cabinets, and felt like it lacked something in open backed cabs and combo amps. Since the express isn't a bottom endy amp, and since we know it was originally meant for a 4x12 with greenbacks, it makes sense that you need the extra punch that you lose by going away from the 4x12.

hello, +1 moose on the experiences with g12m's and g12h's and the cabs they sound best in. however i had a bit of the opposite experience with respect to open and closed back cabs. i played my express clone through an avatar 2-12 open back (g12h30w & vin. 30 combination) for a week or two before i ever tried it with my 4-12 with greenbacks but when i did i just felt the difference made the amp sound superior. of course a factor could be the avatar speakers are brand new production but my greenbacks (prs 50w voice coil oem version), while they still don't have much playing time on them, are early 90's production. i just seemed like the amp suited the 4-12 more to my ears. but, they both sound killer. rh
