How difficult is a build with all parts supplied (Ceriatone)

Post by Seemoore »

Is it worth it to save a couple $100 bucks and build the Overtone Special from a kit, OR, should one get the "full working chassis" ?

I have built some pedals from BYOC and some way back from the book, "Electronic Projects for Musicians'.

I know how to solder and keep things neat.

Also know that I'd be dealing with voltages that I never dealt with before, but I wouldn't be building the amp while it's plugged in.

I've too many clips of the Overtone and it sounds so good.

This thread may help you out:

Welcome to the forum by the way

Just do a forum search for Ceriatone and you'll find much more.

Not too hard if you can construct things like these. Look around this board at the builds if it looks to hard then buy one. But there is allot of info about these amps.
I used the photos, the brown note build guide, the #124 schematic and photos. You don't get any build info with the amp not even a layout. It's on Nik's site.
Everything is pretty good quality and Nik is very helpful. I only changed a couple of bits like the foot switch jack. You will need some shrink wrap too.

If you take your time and be methodical you can end up with a nice amp.

I would recommend the kit. You will learn a lot during the construction and you will be in a better position to modify the amp to your tastes.

I'm currently in the process of a build-from-scratch. While I'm not sorry I did this (my first amp ever) the hard way, I think the kit would have saved me a lot of headache. I'd say go for it, especially if you want something that will look pretty professional when you're done. I was more interested in the learning process (and I don't care what stuff looks like as long as it sounds good) so a bare aluminum chassis didn't bother me. In any case, the kit definitely cuts down the number of ways a greenhorn like you or I can go wrong. I didn't drill any holes that didn't work after a fashion, but I drilled plenty that either look ugly or made for a rather tight squeeze in places. It's all about what part of the process you are excited about, which might be anything from the whole bit to just the results.

Thanks guys, I'm going with the kit -tranny's, after talking with Mercury Mag's I can save a little on that end.

The only thing that bothers me is the wire twists, and some of the resistors that go horizontal, both I believe, have something to do with hum resistance. ?

I'm only 2 hours away from one of the tech centers so that's do-able if needed.

One more thing, do the kits come with all the wiring, I noticed from the pics that a couple wires look like shielded cable?

I have a new set of 50w transformers for the Ceriatone that I can sell.
