Tone Tubby Speakers in D-Style Amps

Post by jackdc100 »

I was checking out Steve Kimock's website and he describes that he uses Tone Tubby alnico speakers in the cabs for both his Dumble and Two Rock amps. Has anyone here tried this combination? How do they compare to the Celestion G12-65 reissues? I would imagine they have a very different character than most speakers that people use in Dumble-style amps. Thanks,
-Jack

Hi Jack,

I'm currently testing my relatively newbuild Dumble clone with two caps

- a Tone Tubby alnico fitted, 1x12 open cab (boogie style)
- and a closedback 2x12", w. Celestion H12 72'

A they are like day and night.

The Tone Tubby is extremely bright, compared toe the celetion one. And I have more or less settled on the celtion 12H variety, in the current blueprinting phase, where I have added a small cap (40pf) on the master volume etc.

The settings are 'normal' - treble, middle, bass & presence all on '5' - when using the celestion 2x12H.
Whereas with the Tone Tubby, I have to dial presence to '0' and treble to 2-3, and its still extremely bright and piersing, outch

Conclusion: The Tone Tubby is not your first choise with a D style amp IMHO

Interesting... I had a TT AlNiCo briefly, although that was before getting the D'Lite. It was used with a Bad Cat (Vox/Matchless-type amp). At the time, I did not have a Celestion G12-65 to compare it with.

But my perception of the speaker at that time was different from bluesfendermanblues: the TT seemed quite dark, at least compared to the modified Celestion that Bad Cat used in the cabinet, and darker still in comparison to the Weber AlNiCo Blue Dog that found a permanent home in that Bad Cat. So I guess I would be surprised if that same TT were brighter than the G12-65 that I have. I've not played through a Celestion H12-72.

Thanks guys. I think I'm going to play it safe and get the Celestion speaker. I was into the idea of using an alnico but in my limited experimentation I seem to like ceramic speakers more. Those Tone Tubbys are pretty expensive as well (though the celestions aren't cheap either). Do you guys find the Avatar cabinets to be decent?

I have the 1265 and have heard the TT. I think the TT is a great speaker for the D style amp but my new favorite speaker is the Cannabis rex.

I think that speaker is simply perfect for the dumble sound!

I have a Tone tubby ceramic here for the guys to try out.

so far noone out of the last 5 guys I can recall liked the TT with a dumble style amp. Too dark and bassy, every single person said. I'm currently using a g12-30H celestion for my 25 watters, and everyone seems to like that sound much better.

I think around here g12-65 is suggested for 50 watts.
it really is a journey, and you just cant farm out the battle wounds
