bigger coupling caps in od
Hi,i was wondering if anyone has tried(much)bigger coupling caps in the od and what results came out of that.
Thanks in advance,Ed

My opinion only, but after 3 builds, w/ bassman iron, a 50W ODS and a #124, anything larger than the stated values available here, adds mud to the tone. Start with the known values as a baseline.
Gee where have I heard than before?

I strayed off the farm in a lot of areas with mixed success, but I got mud when I went much beyond established values for bypass/coupling caps. YMMV.

Re: bigger coupling caps in od
Hmm,i am expirimenting a little and like what i am hearing.Have gone as far as.047 on od1 and .022 on od2.That seemed a little too much but the values in between had pretty nice tones.I guess i like mud(not very surprising being a potter by trade).
I think it has more to do with the fact that i am using the bluesmaster pi and el34`s with about 405 Volts on the plates and a 3.4K OT combined with RCF and Fane speakers though.
And that i like mud of course:-)

IMHO the key to the OD tone is limiting the lows between stages. Also remember that the drive pot is 100K or 250K so the input impedance of OD2 is fairly low. You'll find that if you calculate the LF cutoff a larger coupler will cut off very low.
Stick with the known values. JMO

I'm using 10nF in preamp like the Two Rock and Fuchs amps.
The Two Rock schematic can found on this forum. And you can see the same values from the pcitogram af the PCB in the fuchs amps, in the downloadable manual for the supreme.
- 10n from V1b to the OD input - thecutoff freq is around 60Hz if you use 220k with 100k trimmer.
- 10n from V2a to V2b
- 10n from V2b
I think it sounds good, maybe because it cuts out the mod, going the two overdrive stages. I guess you could put 20n on V2b if you care for more pottom, post OD.
I like these values, but again each man to his own preference.

FWIW i settled on 0.022 for od 1 and 0.1 for od 2.
I like the way it sounds now more than it did before.
To me it sounds bigger without being muddy but maybe it`s all in the mind.

Re: bigger coupling caps in od
Just realized;i hardly ever ever use the neck pickup in OD and if i use it it`s only on the high strings above the 7th fret.Been doing that for over 35 years.
I guess this is where my lack of mud problem comes from.
I even upped the caps a bit with no problems.

Re: bigger coupling caps in od
Correction,
I stated above the 10n's does it for me on v1b v2a v2b, but now its past tense, did instead.
I've gone to 50n (47n) on V1b, 10n on V2a and 5n (4,7n) on V2b
AND lowered my 100k OD trim to just below 9 o'clock.
These cap values AND the lowering gives me an even better RF tone IMHO - both with strat/tele and Les Paul HB's
PS: I think it would be helpfull if you provide info on which guitar(s) you are using.....
