Any delay pedal recommendations?

Post by markmalin »

Hi Guys,

I'm looking to get a delay pedal, but I don't want it to cut down the signal from my guitar into my amp, or color the tone. Any suggestions? I was thinking of going with Line 6's DL4, which is really versatile, but I'm reading reviews and finding it "sucks tone". I don't want to pay more than a couple hundred for one, and would like to run it in my effects chain on the input to the amp (I don't have an effects loop). I would appreciate any advice from you tone kings out there.

Thanks!
Mark.

The DL4 does suck tone a little bit. I recommend the T-Rex Replica. By far, the best delay pedal I have ever used.

Thanks, guys. Wow, the T-Rex Replica sure isn't cheap. Is there no descent option for around 250?

One more thing about the dl4 is that the footswitches are PCB mounted and do not hold up well on the road. If I had a nickel for every time I've heard someone complain about one breaking... I'd have at least a buck fifty

I love my EH Deluxe Memory man. Sounds fat and right. I have never noticed a huge Sucking of tone.

It is and old vintage one from the 70's, but I believe the reissues are pretty good too.

Bang for the buck... Line6 Echo Park.

I just got a Boss DD-7 and really like it.

Any opinions on the Akai Headrush-2 ? The added looping feature would be nice, but it it sucks tone, it's not worth it. Anyone use one of these?

Looks like EH has a Stereo Memory Man (the previous one) which was analog. If that's basically the same as the Deluxe Memory Man, but withough the extra swtichs I may try for a used one of those.

Really depends on what you're using it for...looping? general ambience/delay? For a general delay and If you have the bones - T-rex replica. If you don't, shrug hit a GC and pickup a simple boss DD-3, DD-6, DD-20, or a line 6. "Tone-sucking" is all relative. Dave Grissom uses the Line 6 and his tone seems A-Ok to me. You can always return them if they don't cut it. The whole issue with the line 6 switches breaking would be a non-issue for me because I tend to use one setting and leave it on and it's usually very subtle delay (mixed more towards dry). If you're a tap dancer, it may be something to think about.

I got the notion somewhere (Mark Abrahamian?) that many of the touring guys use Line6 products because they're good enough, reliable enough, and they know that if one goes down, they can run to the nearest GC or mom & pop music store and get a new replacement. Booteek pedals are harder to come by when you're in a pinch.

I'm not really a looper, but the added option to play a few changes and practice soloing over them would be nice. That's why I say looping is an added advantage. Live I'd be using it as a delay to add some depth.

Thanks for the input.

+1 on T-Rex Replica. It is built like a tank and sounds amazing.

Minus lots on the Line6 Echo Park--not because it doesn't do lots of cool stuff and, when it's on it sounds great--because it's not true bypass and the clock noise (tick, tick, tick) bleeds thru when it's disengaged. At least mind does.

Then again, this is a common problem with digital delays, so I'm not surprised.

ALL ABOUT TC

Hey bro, I must say that the TC Electronics Nova Delay is quite the badass. i have it run in my chain and there is no doubt that it makes no diff. in my tone and i run matchless into tele or lp. it has knobs that will make your head spin and stereo options that im not setup yet to use but im telling you that if you have about 180 ebay is the right choice.

PEACE.
