Components?
I saw someone recommend 225P caps.. Are they Orange drops? Where can I get them?
What kind of caps and resistors do you guys favour, and where do you buy them?
I used riken ohm cf resistors for my last project, and 715 OD caps. The resistors are too expencive and hard to get, to keep using.
What kind of transformers do you like, and where do you buy them?

Re: Components?
I used Rikens as well... I took them out and replaced with Vishay Dale RN65 metal films. I prefer them.
Almost all Dumble pics I have seen show the PS series Orange Drops. Not the 225P. tubesandmore.com has them.

Re: Components?
I posted about 225P, they sound identical to type 6PS, I used them because I had them at hand. FWIW I have 6PS caps to use in my next builds. I bought the 225's on a reccomendation from David Allen because I couldn't source the 6PS at the time, he said that in a blind taste test no one would ever be able to tell the difference. Keep in mind also that the current Production 6PS caps are made with different materials, on different machines, and by a different company than when Dumble was building.

Can any of you clear something up for me?
In regard to plate resisters, I've heard conflicting opinions on using metal oxide. Some say never use them in that application.
Any tonal reason to NOT use them?

Re: Components?
Dont have clips, but i built a 70`s version, used metal oxide on all the plates/bias and cathode`s ONLY, the dang thing was smooth as a baby`s ass!! BUT they WONT work AT ALL in a 80`s 90`s version! hth`s, jpPete wrote:Can any of you clear something up for me?

Re: Components?
Some people are just stubborn. Metal films are quiet and have wider frequency range than carbon. I found that the Vishay/Dale's sound is smoother and more complex in charactor than Xicon metal films. I found that old style carbon comps simply sounded dull, I removed them from my first Dumble clone over a year ago and never looked back.Pete wrote:Can any of you clear something up for me?

FWIW Bogner uses the Vishay/Dale RN65`s for most of the plate loads in the ExstacyBob-I wrote:Some people are just stubborn. Metal films are quiet and have wider frequency range than carbon. Re: Components?
I think I'll have to start using mouser. So far I've used hoffman, and planned to use tubesandmore, because they are so easy to navigate, and hav mainly guitar-amp stuff. Mouser has so much that i sometimes get lost looking.. but as long as you know what you're looking for, I suppose it
ll work.

ll work.

Re: Components?
Maybe a page with components and the mouser page/part number would be helpful! Anyone feeling generous with the time to compile??
I could do a little when I get a moment free later......

Re: Components?
Hopefully this will give you a head start. Most part numbers and suppliers are accurate, but quantities (especially for resistors) aren't even in the ball park. I was working this up to confirm my suspician that it ain't cheap to build an amp from scratch.
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.
Re: Components?
My rule on quantities is to buy at least 2 times what I need, but to make sure I hit the second price point on the list I.E. if 1-9 is $.15 each and 10-100 is $.08 each, I get 10 even if I only need 4.Normster wrote: but quantities (especially for resistors) aren't even in the ball park.
For this last build I didn't buy a single resistor or cap until the tweaking session started.
