Is it possible

Post by rutledj »

In search for an amp that has both a Fender clean type channel with a smooth od, do any of you think it would be possible to achieve this with a dumble type ckt?

Has anyone tried building an amp with the basic fender preamp like you would normally find in a Deluxe reverb and matching it with a good od ckt?

I've noticed in some Fender amps (Blues Deluxe) they tend to put an extra gain stage in front of the tone stack. Is this because this type of tone stack works better if the signal is already at it's distorted level before it enters the ts?

Just looking for a great strat tone next. To my ears, Strat and fender clean are made for each other. Now to tackle the Strat OD tone.

Thanks,
Rut

I built a head like that, but I'm having some noise issues.

It has 3 channels, the first is an AB763 type like a Super or a Twin, the other 2 are Dumble HRM style. I also included a parallel effects loop and reverb, all going into a 2x6L6 output section.

I like the overall concept but I have to figure out the crackling noise issue before it's useful. I believe I have a bad filter cap, or a cold solder joint somewhere. I'll get to it soon.

The "bluesmaster" design would work with a deluxe tonestack. There's a schematic in the files section - just plug in the Fender values for the preamp.

heisthl, Is this the file you are referring to

It still appears just a Dumble ckt with different plate resistor values. Is that all it takes to make the ckt Strat friendly?

Depends on who's playing the strat.
The point I was trying to make was you can add the OD to any preamp design and the Bluesmaster illustrates that. Granted, you will be going "off the reservation" a bit but it would be possible to marry the Fender to the Dmble OD by tweaking for signal strength and frequency at the OD entrance and finalizing at the OD exit.
So if it must be a Fender pre amp you can adapt the OD to accomodate.

A friend of mine who plays a Fuchs ODS 50 likes the way his sounds with a good bit of clean boost into the amp. I don't know how different the Fuchs is from your build but it might be worth a try.

IMHO, the Bluesmaster will do what you're looking for. Fender cleans and Marshall OD with just a hint of that Dumble thang. Not exactly the Robben tone, but a very versatile amp.
