Would it be possible (without extra relays) to have the bright switch work only for the clean channel? When OD is engaged the bright switch would be disabled.
I have nonHRM with individual masters + 3 position bright switch (on/off/on).
Any ideas ?

Re: Clean channel bright switch option
I did this on my non-HRM build, and IIRC there was an unused half of the OD relay that I used to basically disconnect the bright switch if it was engaged. It works very well, IMHO. I also have a three-position switch for bright, adding either nothing or 39p or 62p. 120p or higher seemed a bit too much for my taste. 39p adds a nice sheen to things.mat wrote:Would it be possible (without extra relays) to have the bright switch work only for the clean channel? If the relay half in question is NC when OD is off, then just use the NC connections in series with the bright switch. When the relay opens that, the switch is disabled.

Hmmmm... IIRC, there is no unused half of the OD relay.

You're right. Sorry...that's what the third relay does in my amp. It is just done in parallel with the OD relay, such that it disconnects the bright switch when OD is on.odourboy wrote:Hmmmm... IIRC, there is no unused half of the OD relay.
Too many tweaks...I need to document them all and start keeping better track.

Just a thought...but if you're going to go to the trouble of switching the Bright cap in/out...it seems it wouldn't be that much more work to just have switchable Volume controls...that way you can dial in the input gain seperately.

I think I understand what you're saying: you could switch a resistor in parallel to the input level to increase gain or in series to reduce it?Fischerman wrote:Just a thought...but if you're going to go to the trouble of switching the Bright cap in/out...it seems it wouldn't be that much more work to just have switchable Volume controls...that way you can dial in the input gain seperately.
What advantage do you see in that?

The ability to dial in the input gain seperately for Clean vs. OD. Sometimes I think I'd like to run the Clean gain a little lower (less compression...more 'bounce') than I would for OD. Others might want just the opposite.

I follow you. Yes, that could be good. I have an unused half of the relay that disconnects the bright switch, and I've thought about switching the amount of LNFB on V1b. In my amp, the clean sounds better with 60M or more in the feedback loop, but the OD sounds tighter with closer to the 44M. I'm a bit concerned about the length of those leads going all the way from V1 up to the front, but then I could mount another relay back there near it.Fischerman wrote:The ability to dial in the input gain seperately for Clean vs. OD. How many relays can we fit in there?
PS - apologies for hijacking, but odourboy is right: there isn't a way to switch out the bright cap with a two-relay setup for OD and PAB.

Thanks for the answers and no problem hijacking - the seperate input gain is a great idea and interests me also very much. I just might want to run the clean channel hotter than the od channelPS - apologies for hijacking, but odourboy is right: there isn't a way to switch out the bright cap with a two-relay setup for OD and PAB.
I think I'll try a small bypass cap for the clean master..
