In Utero - Clean - Marshall Super Lead Plexi Modded Earnie Bailey

Post by desertmouth90 »

I wanted to start a discussion as these guys on this channel are reluctant to reliquish the schematics for some reason.

Im a sucker for a nice clean amp. I have many High gain amps despite none being a marshall lead. But however I want to see if anyone had any insight on how to achieve Kurt Cobains Modded Marshall amp for the cleans on In utero. Earnie Bailey (Kurt Cobain's former guitar tech) apparently modded a Plexi with a bad OT to achieve this.

Many thanks,

Look forward to talking on this subject!

From what I recall in an interview that Earnie Bailey did, he said that he found an old toasted Marshall amp in a dumpster and got a hold of a Fender Dual Showman schematic and a JCM800 schematic to create a hybrid clean amp that sounded like a tube version of the Roland Jazz Chorus. I would assume that he borrowed the power section circuit of the Dual Showman to get the cleanest power amp he could and then combined that with the clean input from the Marshall layout and adjusted it until he had a really great clean sound for the band he was in at the time.

That's where I would start first.

Earnie also mentioned that the best platform for this mod would be a 100W plexi type clone, so that further reinforces that it was most likely a 2 gain stage preamp layout with gain stages that didn't have any bypass capacitors over their cathode resistors like the low input of a JCM800 reflects.

If you want max clean with insane reserve power then see if you can track down a late 70s Peavey Mace.

Preferably the head version, but I have cut down the combo's into just a head .

Hopefully you will not have to ship that monster too far due to its weight!

It sounds like two stage plate drive. No CF with input stage, ts, stage two.. a Twin with a Marshall buttock.
