Choke Location on an ODS

Post by dragonbat13 »

I'm installing a choke in an old D'lite chassis. I'm building the amp as a 102 high plate skyline. I have a twin reverb choke I need to drill holes for.

My question is. Should I just install where the 102 layout has the choke? Or is there a better place? Room is getting a bit tight and I don't want to drill anymore unnecessary holes if possible.

I believe I have room along the front by the pilot ligh. But I'm not sure it will get enough airflow. Also wondering about the leads running inside the board from that location.

Thank you for any help. I plan on starting a thread for this amp. Some of you my know the project I'm talking about. It's been an on and off thing for 10 years.

Thanks for any help.

connect it before you cut the wires. then move it around as you listen for hum. Normally, the location matters far less than the OT

Placing it between the PT and OT is a good bet. Be sure you have the frame grounded to the chassis when you try it. The leads can be loosely twisted together to minimize any interference they might cause.

I already have to output and power transformer locations. Would I need to go so far as to having the power tubes installed to try the "headphone method"?

I'm going to look into that. Thanks for the info.

I have just enough room in the same location as the 102 layout, I'm going to read up on the headphone trick and see about the two different locations mentioned.

No, power tubes are not needed for headphone trick. When the PT and OT have been positioned, you can "bend" the EM field by moving the choke around between the PT and OT, sometimes making the hum worse. So, yes, listening while positioning is a great idea.

Just wondering,

What's the transformer all the way on the right of the picture for?
