I can’t get this song out of my head.

Post by Mark »

Hi

It’s not a bad thing as it’s an old Smokey Robinson song I heard in the 80’s when Sydney radio station 2JJ was interviewing Elvis Costello.

The song is “The hunter gets captured by the game.”
While I originally heard the Marvellettes 1967 version with the Funk Brothers playing on it.

It has been covered by Grace Jones, Blondie and Massive Attack with Tracey Thorne.
However, I really like Jerry Garcia’s version, I’m not a fan of the Grateful Dead at all, but I think he nailed this song, I think his less is more attitude works for this song.

I vote Massive Attack/Tracey Thorn. I saw them some years ago at a Moogfest. Ella Fitzgerald's version is great too.

Everything but the girl and Massive Attack are both interesting bands. I had a girlfriend who was into them and she often played their CD’s.

Another old song I have had some fascination over is Windmills in your mind. Again another girlfriend had a recording of what I thought was the Smiths doing the song and I liked it. I saw the girlfriend decades later and asked her about the song and of course she had no recollection of it. It was sort of like this version.

I think I like the European sound/chord changes and the imagery in the lyrics. I didn’t realise that it was written for the movie the Thomas Crown Affair. I end up watching the original movie and the 1999 remake. I found the original movie with Steve McQueen culturally interesting. Some of the Dirty Harry movies are culturally interesting, the music has the jazz-rock vibe with flutes playing, the clothes and landscape are very different in comparison to today.
