Need help with a TR-modded/rebuilt 68 Bassman ODS style amp

Post by sunnys141 »

Hey folks!

It's my first post here. A lot of info that's shared here is pretty over my head cause I don't really have an EE background but reading these threads has still been enlightening!

So, I've been looking for a (reasonably priced) D-style amp for a while and saving up for it too. I have a couple of options in mind and I was offered this interesting 68 Bassman that was apparently gutted and modded by Bill Krinard in the early days of Two Rock (probably in the early 90s). The seller purchased it on TGP in 2001 when it was in its original head form with the silver grill cloth. The buyer put it in a combo shell and had a custom faceplate made. According to him, it's a two channel amp with BF cleans and a smooth OD channel. The seller is currently working on getting the broken NFB switch fixed after which I'm hoping he can send me a sound clip or two.

I've been able to gather some info about it like that it may be an HRM ODS and has a buffered effects loop built in.The seller says it may be similar to a TR Emerald 50. The wiring is definitely a bit messy but I'm curious about the quality of the amp. Apparently Bill used NOS parts whenever doing mods like this. But would it stand up to regular gigging? Is there any info someone here might be able to provide by looking at the gut shots?

So you are looking for a D-style amp for regular gigging, you don't yet have the cash on hand to buy a clone, and your electronics knowledge is limited. If this amp is indeed a K&M prototype, it is an interesting artifact, but may not be the best choice for you. Even a person with a good electronics background would need to invest significant time to understand what the circuit is and to maintain it so that it would be dependable. I think a production D clone from the used market would be a better bet. At this moment it looks like you'd need around $3k to purchase one.

Hmmm well, I’m about to sell some stuff and I should have the cash in the next 3-4 weeks. So, I’m doing some research to see what would work. Also, I’ve seen d-style clones under 3k for sure.
