Clean Tone String Pop
I was wondering if you guys with the D amps experience the same thing I do when playing in the clean channel?
If I pick pretty a single note hard I get a real loud attack, almost a pop when I play. Not noise or static. Just a real loud pop of the string.
I notice this more on single coil guitars but it also happens on my humbucker equipped guitars. But less on the neck pickup.
When I switch to overdrive it isn't there.
If I play rather softly in clean mode isn't there so much or when I strum the strings not as bad.
I was just wondering if that is a normal thing with these amps?
I have a 33K grid stopper on CL1 and the typical 220K/500pf on CL2.
Thanks.

Hi Tom,
If I recall correctly you have a switch for high, low or no LNFB, does changing this have any effect on what you are experiencing?

Tom,
If you can record a clip, it might help. I rarely use my clean channel but don't recall anything like a pop.

Re: Clean Tone String Pop
I just have a on/off switch for the LNFB.
It's not really a problem, just something I noticed with this amp.
Like the attack is really loud, with a percussive type pop.
Maybe pop isn't the right word.
I don't have a microphone yet, have one in the works.

Re: Clean Tone String Pop
I also hear a 'thud' like pick attack in my amp. But I also hear it when using the OD as well.
I just listened to my Deluxe Reverb and the initial pick attack does not produce any 'thud', but simply the sound of the note - only louder.
Could it just be that some cap that is too large and needs to be made smaller to reduce the bass?
Or is there some response in the orange drop caps that is causing it?
Added: What about the PI .02 input cap? A old Fender Twin uses .001
Or is this a Power Supply issue?

If you have a Mallory 150 try subbing that .1 for the bass cap.. The initial response should be softer..If you think it's a bass frequency around 100Hz-1K
Hope this helps

I'm probably worrying about nothing.
It's just that I have noticed it more with this amp than any other.
It just has more ping when you attack hard.
I'm probably over thinking it as usual.

Re: Clean Tone String Pop
This thread is 14 years old but what the heck, I have the same exact issue as described by structo at the beginning of the thread.
As a guess, I thought the power supply was too stiff because of the larger caps. I replaced them with 2 220uF caps last night. It was late so I couldn't play it much but it seemed to make a difference. Other than that the amp sounds great. Does anyone have any other ideas what this might be?
The only difference between my #183 and the one in the files section is that mine has a built in dumblelator and I used two series 500uF caps for the power supply instead of two 330uF caps.I was wondering if you guys with the D amps experience the same thing I do when playing in the clean channel?

Re: Clean Tone String Pop
Isn’t this what everyone wants and expects from a D style amp circuit? String dynamics and headroom?

Re: Clean Tone String Pop
Yeah I suppose… structo’s last comment sums it up pretty well.
Re: Clean Tone String Pop
I think this is sometimes (not always) the case with amps with solid state rectification and less noticeable with tube rectification in my experience. My sense is the attack with solid state is quicker and less "rounded" meaning the peak of the attack is instantly there where with tube rectification there is a slight build up to the peak of the attack.
Just a thought ............. may not be correct but it's my current thinking about this.

Re: Clean Tone String Pop
That makes sense to me. I wonder if anyone has tried a tube rectifier for an ODS style build…
Re: Clean Tone String Pop
I think I experienced this with my UltraPhonix build with a stiff power supply and 12ax7 phase inverter tube. Lots of pick attack hitting fast even on quick strums. I swapped the phase inverter to 12AT7 and it's much, much better and slower, if that makes sense. I dunno why but that's what it did. Maybe lower voltage on the PI? I dunno

Biasing hotter also seems to make the attack slower.rccolgan wrote: ↑Fri Sep 20, 2024 1:30 am I think I experienced this with my UltraPhonix build with a stiff power supply and 12ax7 phase inverter tube.
