Has anyone tried 25w greenbacks? I know the power handling of this speaker in a 2x12 would not handle a cranked 100w amp, but a 50w amp would be comfortable.

From the celestion website: "the G12-65 was originally created as a higher-power handling version of the G12M Greenback."

Cheers,
Rob.

I tried 2 older Greenbacks this weekend. [EDIT] Actually my friend emailed today that they were V12 80's, Silver Series so I am way off thinking they were Greenbacks. He had Greenbacks before the V12's and says they sounded even better so now I am really wanting to try some other speakers. So what follows is the commentary on the V12's[END EDIT]
They were full, with no buzz and with tons of lows in full OD. It was wall of sound, very warm and full range, with no spikes anywhere. The highs were slightly attenuated in clean mode, a very useable clean sound IMHO. I was using a very well balanced HB equipped Les Paul and the speakers were in a Dr. Z Maz Senior amp being driven by my 50w HRM amp. Its the best rock OD sound I have ever gotten with this amp.

I also tried the speakers in a Tone King Comet - 1 Heritage G12M paired with a Hellatone (G12-H30) again driven by my HRM clone. There was tons of bottom, with more top on these than the early greenbacks. I prefer the cleans on this setup slightly, but the OD was better through the early Greenbacks. Still I wouldn't kick her out...

Lastly, I use an Ear Candy cab loaded with 2 Hellatone (G12-H30) speakers. The cab I think has a spikey low mid issue, but the sound is similar to the Tone king setup above but maybe with slightly less top. My amp is tweaked to this cab so it sounds pretty decent with the exception of the low mid hump. I am is a square room so it could be the standing waves causing the hump (guess I need to get out more  ). I did not get to A/B this setup with the above systems so just going from memory.

Celestion G12 vintage 30's

Post by RJ Guitars »

When I first setup my amp I used an old Randall Combo amp as my speaker cabinet. It's an open back setup roughly the size of a twin. It has two vintage 30's in it and it actually sounded pretty good. I didn't really think about it again after I finished my ODS combo cabinet since the Randall had two speakers in it. I'd say that these speakers are certainly decent sounding. I'll consider the idea of using one of them in my combo and report the results...

Well I've had the TonkerLite in my amp for over a week. Since my amp is now finished I've played until my fingers were sore almost every night.

I am starting to grow fond of this amp... maybe I'm figuring it out.

I have to say that the TonkerLite helped cured the buzzyness and smoothed out any brittleness I had.

I haven't tried most of the recommended speaker choices (G1265) and maybe I don't know much... but that TL it is a great sounding speaker.

Today I ran my settings a little brighter than I normally do and found some other sounds I really loved... the speaker didn't seem to limit the high end and it really puts out sweet tones in the overdrive setting.

I've been workin through a bunch of Jam tracks and if I can get something reasonably presentable I'll post a clip.

I'll be curious when Odourboy gets his installed to hear what he thinks...

I'd give the TonkerLite a thumbs up for tone and you can't say anything bad about knocking 10 or 12 pounds of the amp weight.

Received my G12-65 ... playing around with it for a few days. I think this will bring out the best in this bright D'Lite 22 amp. I pulled the BASS MOD out of it and that seems to have improved the sound, as well.

I think when this is broken in it will be good. Also works well in parallel with my 2x10 Emi 10516 Legend cab.

After I've played with it a while I'll record and post something too.

I love the idea of that speaker in a small combo. It would be super easy to haul around. So, I guess the next question is - where did you find a good price? Time to give one a shot.....

Looks like $90 is pretty standard at most places ... Musicians Friend, Music 123, etc

Thanks for keeping us posted on this RJ.

No sign of mine yet (the local strore i usually buy speakers from didn't have ay in stock so it's on order) so it'll probably be at least another week before I have it and get it broken in. I'm really keen to try this thing out!

Cheers!

I'm going to try the Tonkerlites.
I bought them at Music123, total= $165.
They have a Neo magnet that only weighs 4 oz, at first I thought it was a misprint. :D

Where I'm really interested in the Neo's (after all I'm almost 57), I just bought a combinaton that seems like it's gonna be great. It's an Eminence Delta Pro 12-A and a boogafunk thiele ported cabinet.

So far I've only had about 10 minutes with it, but it sounds huge and rich, something I didn't expect for a few hours of breakin. Best of all, it's tiny and easy to carry. If only it was a Neo maginet.

Cast frame 12 for a hundred and change. Sweet. Is it dark so far? Hugh and rich I guess isn't dark. Looks in profile kinda EV12/altec 417 ish.

I'll have to fill you in later on that. I did feel that the higs were sweet and smooth. Again, 10 minutes is not enough to evaluate much less break it in.

Anybody try an Eminence Commonwealth? That would seem to be closest Emi to the EV which seemed to be the Dumble choice in all the later combos.

I did not know that. I bought the Delta-Pro12A because it almost perfectly matches the Thiele parameters of the EVM. Sounds great, I just played another 1/2 hour on it and it's huge and meaty, with plenty of nice smooth highs.

I thought the Commonwealth was a clone of the JBL120? At least that what my local speaker supplier stated. (OC Speakers). He told me the Delta Pro is the EV clone.... :?
