Cannabis Rex Vs. Tone Tubby Ceramic
Hello,
Has anyone had the chance to A/B these speakers? I've been thinking about moving my alnico tubby into an open back 2x12 with one of these, but I'm not sure wich one to go with. I have heard the Cannabis rex before on it's own (in a rivera fandango) and it had a pleasing sound compared to the stock speaker that came in the combo. Unfortuneately the only tubby I've heard is my alnico. I know the Rex and the tubby use the same cone, but the tubby has a bich larger magnet.....
I'll be using tweed deluxe style fender, Marshall 50w, and Wreck (once I finally build one) heads with this... either speaker should handle the power combined with the alnico (not that I usually play all that loud anyway)
I guess I'm just trying to find out where to put my $, seeing as I can get a Rex for alot less than a tubby. I'd rather buy the piece I'd rather want the first time round though, and save in the long run.
Thanks for the help....

Re: Cannabis Rex Vs. Tone Tubby Ceramic
I've used them both, and been happy with both. The ceramic versions, that is. Never tried the alnico. Too rich for my blood.
Charlie out at Tone Tubby offered me a dealership, but the buy-in was $2000! If I had two grand to dump into my wee tiny amp business tomorrow, I certainly wouldn't buy twenty speakers with it!
So I get my C Rex speakers from bltsound.com. They add a discount if you order two or more speakers (mix n match).
I sold an amp with a C Rex to a tele guy, and he liked it so much he put them in three of his other amps.
It's a fave of the ToneQuest Report. My other fave Eminence is the Texas Heat.

Unfortuneately, $2000 buy-ins are becoming more and more common....Argh....I think I'll probably go with the rex....I think I can even get it through one of the distributers that I use pretty cheap....
Thanks for the input. I knew someone out there had to have tried them both!

I have compared the two. I prefer the Emi CR's. They seem to have a little more harmonic richness happenning. BTW I've never tried the Alnico Tubbies either, so YMMV

Re: Cannabis Rex Vs. Tone Tubby Ceramic
I have an Alnico Tone Tubby in my brown Vibrolux w/reverb I built last year in a DeLuxe Reverb chassis/cabinet (because no-one sells a knockoff Vibrolux chassis). Sounds great, I have had it in a local studio, and pro music shop where the pro ears also liked it. (Caveat, I put a pair of used '60s RCA blackplate 6L6GCs and all vintage preamp/rectifier tubes in it.)
I have the ceramic TT in my '62 DeLuxe, which has RCA grayplate 6V6s and Telefunken 12AX7s in it, it's much bigger sounding than the original reconed Oxford, no surprise there. I should change out the RCA 6V6s to something with a bit more headroom, it starts to overdrive on 4 with a single P90.
I haven't tried what Tone Tubby is hyping as "The Bomb", which is one alnico and one ceramic in a 2x12 cabinet, but that is a known good technique with Jensens, especially Weber's Chicago Jensens.

Re: Cannabis Rex Vs. Tone Tubby Ceramic
A buddy of mine recently let me borrow a J designs 2 x 12 that he had set up in the "bomb" configuration. I did all of the testing with my customized Deluxe style amp. His alnico had an almost identical sound to mine. The ceramic tubby wasn't what I was hoping it would be. It was big on harmonic richness like the alnico (which I really liked) , but it's low end was really flabby (way too tubby, much more so than the alnico) and it broke up much too soon for my taste.......just my thoughts at the moment... I guess I won't be going for a ceramic tubby anytime soon. I really wanna get my hands on a C. Rex now just to A/B......
Eventually I'll figure out what I'm looking for. Too bad you can't get a EMV 12L with a hemp cone....or a 15.....

Flabby bass from a tone tubby ceramic? Poppycock. Or should I say, It might have something to do with the cab. I really like the bomb in one of my 2x12's but not so much in the other.

The bad cab, which is great with most speakers, is 21" H x 28.5" W x 12 " D. It is quite deep at 12 inches and has a large oval opening in the back.
The good sounding cab is your basic bluesbreaker style 2x12 with the baffle on the front. The dimentions are 28" x 20" X 10.5" It has less internal volume and less bass compared to the larger 2x12.
Having said all of that, I am a stubborn pos so I am currently using the bomb in the large 2x12 with a Lightning and it sounds quite good. I use a pedal for overdrive and have the treble and bass rolled back quite a bit on it.
With the other bad I am using a Kingsley head with a pair of scumback 30 watters in the BB style cab. It sounds wickedly good for straight ahead rock and roll.
Hope this helps.

Gents,
For those that have used the C-Rex, have you paired it with another type of speaker with success? I have heard that the Eminence RWB could be a good pairing. Looking for something with very tight / smooth bass with rolled off highs. It will be mostly used for high gain blues / rock. Love the sound of Celestions, just don't like the spikey highs.
Many Thanks,
John

Hi , I was 1 of the first guys on the internet raving about the Cannabis Rexes a few years back , and I still love them . I've found that 2 Cannabis Rexes in a 2x12 is GREAT. I like them much more than the RW&B. All of this is 'personal preference though.John_P_WI wrote:Gents,

I have a few ToneTubby Ceramics and like them a lot too but prefer the Cannabis Rexes . . Once again 'personal preference'. I think the TT Ceramics are great speakers too.

Re: Cannabis Rex Vs. Tone Tubby Ceramic

my P90 Les Paul is happy with G12H in the 18W side
what's about Cannabis Rex and the Fender/others side?

Re: Cannabis Rex Vs. Tone Tubby Ceramic
I had both TT Ceramic and C-Rex. The TT was a bit bright surprisingly.
I liked the C-rex better and they are cheaper.
TT gone, still have 2 c-rex
