First HRM clip

Post by Normster »

I spent some time with the 100watt HRM this weekend. (Built with Funk's chassis and boards. Pretty much a straight "HRM 101" build.) Still some tweaking, but I'm liking the slightly overdriven tone with my Ibanez semi-hollow.

Here's a clip from this morning:

As a tribute to dogears, it's a "bathrobe" clip. First verse is clean (neck pu), second is OD at 9:30 (neck pu), third is OD at 9:30 w/mid boost (bridge pu, tone rolled off slightly).

I think the OD is still a little dark so I may up the treble a bit. Anyway, comments and suggestions welcome.

Wow Norm,
Cool tune selection for a tone clip.
Now, that's a clean tone.
If there's a bright switch, I don't hear it.
Kudos, John.

Nice! Particularly liked the third verse. Had some of the LC thing happening! :)

Thanks, guys. I figure that as long as I stick to elevator music you guys HAVE to listen to the tone instead of the playing.

I think the amp has some real potential. Hopefully I'll get a chance to do a bit more tweaking this week.

BTW, no bright switch engaged and I like the tone in the third verse as well. Don't know about the Carlton vibe, but I've always liked a thick bridge pu tone.

Absolutely great Norm, this is the style and tone that is my favorite for a D amp. I'm always interested in improving that "slightly overdriven tone" of my amps.
Is the recording with PAB?? and, what type of speaker??
In your experience, is it easier to get a good "just on the edge of overdrive" with Non-HRM or HRM??

100 watt Bluesmaster, baby. BluzMonster!

No PAB but I did have the mid boost ON for the last verse. Speaker was an Emi RW&B in an open back 1x12. For that "edge of breakup" tone, I really prefer a non-HRM. It just has an openess to it that feels bigger and softer at the same time. The HRM is more focused until you open it up, then it's got some nice punch to it. My favorite so far is the Bluesmaster circuit, but it's not for everyone. It really requires a light touch to bring out the best (for me, anyway).

Thanks, JohnHenry! I find my evening tone to be a lot more aggressive.

Hmm, the RWB speakers are getting pretty good nods for tone with the D clones.
I'm trying to decide before I tweak my circuit much more if I should re-speaker my 2 x 12.
Now I just checked and it's only available in 8 ohm?
That's weird. I wonder why they don't have a 16?

How are the Cannabis Rex spkrs?

The G1265's get great reviews as well as a big price!

I am assuming since a straight HRM build its el34s but damn it if it doesn't sound like 6l6s. This tone is beautiful.

Really nice Norm. I'd like to hear a Tele through that amp with that riff. Kinda floatin' down the river music. I assume that the volume was fairly low. The tone is remarkably full for soft easy picking.

I've only tried it with RW&B so far. This weekend I'll give it a shot with a few different speakers and let you know how things work out.

You guessed it, 6L6's. Stranger still, they're those cheap $5 Chinese tubes from CE. When it's broken in, I'll let Moss try some quality glass in it.

Skyboltone, funny you should mention the Tele. I just put a vintage-style bridge on my Tele and it sounds glorious through the HRM! Chuck has been giving me a few tips on how to wake up my Mexican Tele...Duncan Antiquities and vintage bridge with brass saddles. I expected the Duncans to sound better, but the difference the bridge made came as a total shock. More sparkle, resonance, and sustain. Hard to believe a piece of hardware could make that much difference.

Here's a clip I did last night over the same track. It's the Tele with low gain on the OD. (Same settings as verse 2 above.) I'll get around to some clean clips this weekend.

Norm, you always pull some amazing clean tones out of your amps. The OD is great too. It'll be interesting to see where you take it with some tweaks.

You mention this is near-straight HRM 101, so does that mean no BM PI? If so, this reignites my desire to get that lonely switch on the back of my chassis setup for removing the NFB on V1b.

Thanks! :D
I'm embarassed to say that I can't remember what PI I put in this amp, but I think it was 470R over 10k with 4k7 to ground. When I pull it out of the head cab I'll check and let you know. I may have also used a 10k presence pot.
