Some Dumble FR measurements

Post by neskor »

Today I tried to measure FR response of Tone stack on my #124 clone.
Measurements are done with Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 with Arta and measurement test point is send connector on the loop.
Here is the measurements with Bright switch OFF, Rock ON, Deep ON, OD and Boost OFF.

First treble pot, bottom line position min, then 9 o'clock, 12, 3 and max, all other TS pots are at 12.
Image

Then mid pot, bottom line position min, then 9 o'clock, 12, 3 and max, all other TS pots are at 12.
Image

Then bass pot, bottom line position min, then 9 o'clock, 12, 3 and max, all other TS pots are at 12.
Image

Now the measurements with Bright switch OFF, Jazz ON, Deep ON, OD and Boost OFF.
First treble, bottom line position min, then 9 o'clock, 12, 3 and max, all other TS pots are at 12.
Image

Then mid pot, bottom line position min, then 9 o'clock, 12, 3 and max, all other TS pots are at 12.
Image

Then bass pot, bottom line position min, then 9 o'clock, 12, 3 and max, all other TS pots are at 12.
Image

What I can see from the above pictures, there is no big change in the FR measurements when you pass 12 o'clock on the TS pots, on Rock settings.
On the Jazz settings situation is little better.
Is this normal behavior of the TS pots on Dumble ODS?

Do you use photobucket?

It seems about inline with expectation... the question about the controls not changing the curve much after straight up the middle is an effect of looking at a curve that approaches zero. You hear more than you see.

I find the best sounds by setting everything TS in the middle and turning the BT controls to balance with two hands because of their interactions.

First I tried to insert the pictures from flickr but it won't show, then I tried with photobucket.
What is a preferred photo hosting site here?
I'm not sure if you can see the pictures.
Here is the whole album:

The other thing that bothers me is a Boost feature.
It only boost mid and high part of the spectrum, nothing like a normal boost pedals as Xotic EP booster which I very like.

You can just upload them here if they're not too big. Usually saving as PNG really helps with the size. I'd also think resizing them to be a bit smaller so they aren't quite so huge may help the file size as well. There's a limt to like 10 images per post but you could post a few of them over a few posts.

I'm not...

Photobucket does shady crap like not letting you link your images without forcing a watermark over it (see above) and randomly breaking images later down the road. we've got a ton of image links broken that were to photobucket and the original users went away, and we can no longer view those images due to the broken nature of photobucket and many other image sharing sites randomly changing their mind about linking etc.

I noticed that in most of these plots you have the deep setting as on? do you mean that it was engaged or active?
Most players leave this in the off position..Normal settings for these amps are generally Rock on/Bright off/Deep off ..A Few comparisons with other configurations would be a plus, however?, #124 (Skyliners) have no deep switch option?... Just sayin :D

What I think would be really interesting would be analyzing the difference using different parts like say
.01 Polyester 6PS mid cap vs .01 715/716 Polypropylene
390 ceramic treble cap vs a 390 Silver mica
The Ceramic might be hard to detect?? Although the difference between PS and Polyprop might show up.
The other thing that bothers me is a Boost feature.
It only boost mid and high part of the spectrum, nothing like a normal boost pedals as Xotic EP booster which I very like.
If you want a feature that boosts everything (Like EP) put the FET boost on a footswitch

BTW. Miles I got the joke!

Yeah that is correct, most of these measurements are with the Deep switch ON (active).
I put the Deep switch instead of Mid, personally for me it is more useful.
Still waiting for .01 715/716 Polypropylene to arrive and then I can try to measure difference, but I'm not sure if that will be visible, especially difference between ceramic vs mica.
Maybe if I try to measure THD then difference maybe will be visible.

#124 was originally a Low Plate Classic, later upgraded to a Skyliner stack (150k slope,.01mid cap,250k mid pot and Mid Boost switch) The mid boost was a part of the Skyliner upgrade. I agree with you as I prefer the Deep switch over the mid boost too!, I call it the Blackface switch
Not Sure too if either ap will show up ,although, the 715/716 is a rather notable change IMO

Thanks for the doing the comparison.
