Hammond 373 for a #183 build?

Post by digi2t »

Has anyone used a Hammond 373FX or 373HX for a #183 build? If so, what were your results?

Having a really tough time sourcing an export PT (read MOJO763EX) for a build right now, so I'm looking at alternatives. I can get Hammonds overnight here. I also need it to have 120v tap so I can test and set it up here before I ship it to the UK.

Anyone?

I have used the Hammond 300 series in builds and they are great transformers.
I noticed the difference in weight between those 2 transformers is a lot.
The FX weighs 12.5 lbs and the HX weighs a whopping 17.3 lbs!

I would save myself the 5 lbs in weight and go with the FX, it has everything you need to do the job unless you want the higher plate voltage of the HX.

The nice thing about these transformers is that they already have the 5v winding so no extra transformer is needed to run your relays.

Cheers

Hello --

What Guy said.

Also perhaps consider https://www.hammfg.com/files/parts/pdf/291ZEZ.pdf. Z frame, if that matters. Maybe a somewhat special order, so fails your overnight shipping goal.

Best .. Ian

Thanks for that link Ian. Unfortunately, I'm using the PCB from AAE, and the rectification section is already populated. Not really interested in rejigging everything at this point. Whether it's a Z mount or not isn't really important to me, to be honest.

So I'm guestimating that B+ with the 373FX would be ballparking at about 455v, and the 373HX would be about 490v. Any performance opinions regarding running higher or lower plate voltages? Or is it all corksniffing?

Hi, I was looking at the B+ of the 183 on the Layout in the files section and its about 460v. You will actually be closer to the originals B+ with the 373FX.

Greatly appreciate the replies. I have a 373FX and 1750U on the way.

I'm actually building two units at the same time, the other with Edcor iron. The Edcor OT is actually going to be a 2.2K unit. It'll be interesting to do a side by side comparison when they're both done. I already have a build thread started, I'll put all my findings there when I'm done.

First off, a mighty thank you for this forum and all that chip in with the valuable info. 373FX was pretty much on the money. I don't have them handy, but I'll post the voltages I have on the first build shortly. Not too far off what's been published for a #183 build. Actually, pretty close.

Thanks again everyone.
