Balancing OD volume

Post by rutledj »

I really like the non-hrm I just finished. Is there a way to better balance the vol between clean and od channels? Would a larger R feeding the od volume help with that? There seems to be quite a diff switching between the two channels.

That's what the "ratio" control is for. Adjust that until the 2 volumes balance.

Is ratio the little 100k trimmer in front of the od section? I thought that was more to control the od level (gain).

No he means the OD level control on the front panel.
Set your clean volume where you want it then adjust the OD level to be equal or above the clean level.

I've tried that but I can't even them out.

Something is haywire, then. Which is louder? And what is your input volume set at?

With clean vol at 4, master vol at 2, od gain at 4 and od level at 2 (these are actual numbers on dial, not clock face readings), the od is much louder than the clean. In fact, the clean really isn't loud enough at this setting.

Perhaps the clean channel has a problem?

The input volume does affect the OD.
Better off setting the input (clean) volume at noon and the master at noon.
Then adjust your OD level.

I guess the only problem with that is for bedroom levels, that would be pretty loud :)

Then just set the master volume lower. This is one (perhaps the only) advantage of a master.

You should be able to crank up the master until you get the clean at the level you want, then adjust the OD level (Dumble called this "ratio") to balance the volume.

I've build one this way and I typically run the master at about 4 and the ratio at about 2.
