Blues Master Questions, etc.

Post by jwhousley »

Hello all!! I am about to attempt to build one of the Dumble ODS's. What are the tonal differences in the 124, 102 and Blues Master circuits?

Sorry if this question is dumb..... ;-)

Thank you.

No, not a dumb question, but one that's been asked many times. We have some good reading here:

Perhaps you can make it easier on us if you could describe what you're looking for? Style Of music you play or can possibly compare the sound your hearing to another amp (Fender/Marshall) what guitars you use and what you want the amp to do or sound like? and anything you care to add?..of course any clips, sound files or You Tube vids of the sound you're chasing?..The more detailed the answer the more accurately we can recommend one of those 3 amps for you

Welp, I mainly go after something similar to what SRV had ... without the use of a OD pedal. There are also instances where I need more gain, and more mid scoop, etc.

124 is a pretty gainey amp in OD,however if you want something with a little more gain on the clean channel?
I would go with the Bluesmaster w/ hotter Marshall Style PI. More suited for Rock/Blues :D

if you put the FET on a footswitch/relay and the gain pot in the jack socket on the front you can use that to give you extra gain above and beyond the 'normal' operating conditions of the amp. in clean and OD. It's no surprise to me that David Lindley discovered the FET boost and used it to his advantage with the 2nd gen ODS amp he had on running on empty with Jackson Brown (another Dumble guy by the way).

Very useful addition IMHO. and easy to implement.

I second the vote on choosing the Low Plate Classic.
I am finding these models can have lots of gain on tap with the OD and FET channel and they also sound so smooth on the Overdrive and clean channels and you can tailor the overdrive by changing the plate resistors on the overdrive channel. 100k is stock and if you wanted a different flavor overdrive you can raise them higher. I have also found some interesting flavors of Overdrive by keeping the overdrive channel plates at 100k and raising the values of the cathode resistors from the stock 1.5k to 3.3K.

are you guys running your low plate classics with a 12AY7 PI like the original 2nd gen amps ?

That makes a difference to the volume/gain hitting the output section as it's lower gain than a 12AX7.

I put a 12AX7 in mine originally as I thought louder was always better :D but after talking to Tony he suggested I go back and give the AY7 a chance and I've stuck with it.

Maybe one of these would be useful as a starting place? I strongly encourage you to have a schematic that is an EXACT match to what you're wanting to do along with a layout to
go with it prior to ordering parts. There are some editable SCH files of different Dumble amps. And there are schematics and layouts in the file section under each amp such as 102,124, and 183.
