Especially once you see the insides of these amps.Rick wrote:I had a feeling these wouldn't go at that price. Wonderful as they are, $35K is a heck of a lot of money. Wealthy, obsessed collector types only, I'd think. Lottery winners maybe... Beyond my means, that's for sure.
I'm sure Ken's amps sound great and he should be given credit where credit is due.
But something about a perboardes amp just doesn't look as "expensive" as say a turret board or eyelet.
Reminds me of breadboarding.....

One of these amps ended up being sold to Brad Paisley. Not sure about the other one. IIRC the other is at Ultrasound and still for sale but I might be wrong.Structo wrote:Especially once you see the insides of these amps.Rick wrote:I had a feeling these wouldn't go at that price. Nothing wrong with Perfboard. It was used in all of Ken's amps and even after 20 years they are still going strong. A few "Boutique" amp builders in the 70s and 80s used perf. What makes them so expensive is their rarity. There were only about 100 amps built by Ken and they were'nt often sold by the owners. That was until they found out that a clone could be made to sound as good or better than their original and then some decided to cash in. The two Liverpools up for sale on ebay were being sold after the owners death by his estate.

interesting...

After spending a few months studying the guts of Francesca (It's OK. I'm a doctor), I thought it was quite a work of art. The proof, of course, is in the tone, IMHO.Structo wrote:... doesn't look as "expensive" as say a turret board or eyelet...

early marshalls used perf-board too..
Re: 2 'Pools on ebay w/ chassis pics!
Nothing wrong with perfboard. I fell into some nice old silver and gold plated turret boards, so I just use them. They are nice though, I'd have to say I'm spoiled and prejudiced toward the double barrel turreted boards of the good ol' days. I believe Keystone still makes and sells these things, turrets, and/or turreted boards ready to go. see http://www.keyelco.com/pdfs/M55p126.pdf if interested.
Re: 2 'Pools on ebay w/ chassis pics!
I tend to agree... I really don't like the perfboard, as a builder. It's fine once built, but I really like the tank-like quality of 1/8th" G10 with some big keystone turrets (available from mouser). Perfboard is brittle and thin, which makes it a bit of a PITA to work with.

FYI... Single level turrets at mouser:

Double level turrets:

The prices have gone up substantially since I last bought them.

Another work of art Paul! Your wiring is impeccable!
I like G10FR4 except for what it does to tools.
GPO3 is easy to work with, but I don't like all the fibers.
I'm still kind of mixed on how I feel about turrets vs. eyelets. Eyelets are super easy to do, but turrets are more versatile.

Eardrums!!! We don't need no stinkin' eardrums!
