Thanks Marcus! Starting the day with a couple of great tunes is a good thing.

Robben's Dumble sounds fantastic on that 2nd sound clip! Thanks for sharing it!
My favorite Robben Ford tone has always been when he played the Gibson Super with Jimmy Witherspoon. I think it's the smoothest sweetest tone he's ever gotten. And I love his Dumble tone also.

Marcus
Thanks for posting this and Robben is killin here.
BTW. I hate to break it but Robben didn't take delivery on 102 until 82 so I doubt that is what we are hearing here. I believe the amp he was using with the Jackets around this time was a Yamaha G-100 Combo (solid state)amp. Robben can make anything sing

My 1st amp was the G-50 and was one of the better SS amps in the day and the Jazzers loved them.

I found this on a forum
I need to sit down for a while.....then sell all my amps....Robben and what became the YellowJackets were playing a small club in Hollywood weekly trying out material and alternating sets with a singer they did some studio work with. So I was going to hear Robben all the time and hired him to do a couple clinics at the school I worked for. Live Robben was using just his 335 and a Yamaha G112 it sounded great and I ended up buying a G112 too. In studio I heard Robben was still basically using Fenders and I bet that G112 got used some too. Robben at the clinics didn't care what was there he could get a good sound out of anything, including borrowing a student guitar to demo something after packing his own guitar. Robben has great right hand technique for controlling his attack and phrasing.
Years later when I was working at a friends rehearsal studio Robben used to rent a room all the time to test or get familiar with amps. So I've heard Robben use a lot of different amps and he can find his sound with any amp. I think more of Robbens sound is his guitar choice than his amp selection.
So...as we're on the same page here with Robben, when did you hear the 'dumble' and go down the path that leads us here?

Somewhere I have a schematic of a G-100 if you want to build one.
I believe Robben in those days used Yamaha,Boogies, and I believe Randalls, and of coarse various Fenders (Blackface Bassman)before he landed on the 102 ODS and obviously never looked back. My first experience with the ODS was the TTYD tone in the late 80's. No matter what stomp box and amp I tried I could not get that sound! I knew it was more than just his fingers and he had some kind of boutique amp. it was actually the Handful of Blues album that I discovered it was a Dumble amp and Rugged Road was a big inspiration to build one followed by Aint nothin but the blues that was also pretty amazing which was done with his Tele right after he got it. Then that got me into the Telecaster. (That aint no "country" guitar sound)..
Of course no info on these amps were available until around 2002 where bits and pieces started to surface (HRM circuit) My 1st Dumble build and although it sounded good it got me no closer to that sound. This forum opened and met and learned from many of the Dumble amp Guru's. Brandon,Andy, Gill, Scott Lerner, Gary (Glasswerks) and Henry (Red Plate) and many other great builders all hung out here at 1 time. Where I cut my Dumble teeth, in some ways still chasing that sound
Others that inspired me were David Lindley and of course SRV w/SSS had a huge impact.

very similar to my Ford musical journey
I'm about 10 years to late to the building party though.
It's discussions like this that make me very much appreciate all the amazing people past and present at TAG
over and out.

The funny point is that "it" sounds like a Dumble !!!
... so Yes Robben is really a master to make "anything" sound magic
( concerning Boogie - Mark IIA & B-, Larry was well know to use one : ... I buy one to try to sound like him and was the third to have one in France !!! ... but NEVER sounds like him
But it seems that after, the Mark II with the C and C+ versions became to harsh/metal/Petrucci for Larry and I probably ask Dumble at this time ??? )

In a podcast Robben mentioned he often rented a Dumble at Andy Brauer until he got #102.
Re: Robben Ford killing it with the Yellow jackets-live bootleg
Hey Don Tony I'm sure you have the correct dates. However, although RF sounded great through the Yamaha amps, this sounds to me more like a rented Dumble. The Yamaha tone was smooth, but it didn't feedback like in the Imperial Strut intro, for example. Hope all's well!talbany wrote: ↑Sat Nov 02, 2019 5:33 am Marcus

Good point a rental is always possible. Rule out the Yamaha. How about his Boogie?ayan wrote: ↑Sat Nov 02, 2019 5:33 pmHey Don Tony I'm sure you have the correct dates. I'm going to guess Boogie. Didn't realize Rivera had a hand in engineering the Yamaha.

Re: Robben Ford killing it with the Yellow jackets-live bootleg
I have recordings of RF using the Boogie, some even of him and LC both using 335s and Boogies at gigs they did together at Donte’s here in LA (the place closed down decades ago). The Boogie sound is nothing like on these YellowJackets tunes. I read or heard that RF never really got on with the Boogie and by the time he recorded The Inside Story, he has stopped using it.talbany wrote: ↑Sat Nov 02, 2019 11:50 pmGood point a rental is always possible.
